Property Crime
the unlawful damage to or taking of property of another, regardless of whether the threat of or actual use of physical violence occurs
Robbery

-the unlawful taking with force of threat of force
-43% reportability, 53% of victims require medical attention, unarmed results in more injuries
-90% perpetrated by males, disproportionately committed by members of minority groups (African-Americans)
-most feared crime, motive is economic, criminals robbing criminals
Burglary

-unlawful entry of a house, business, or other structure with intent to commit a felony; no face-to-face contact
-50% are reported, 60% involve forcible entry, 13% involve no forcible entry
-usually perpetrated by poor, uneducated people who can't compete in the labor market, maintenance of party lifestyle
-either residential or commercial; commercial more likely during night, residential during day
Larceny
Property Crime; the unlawful taking of property from the possession of someone other than one's employer
Shoplifting

-theft of property from a retail store by "customers"
-accounts for $31 billion in lost merchandise
-committed by normal/ordinary people, most commonly teenagers (17 years old)
-boosters sell the stolen merchandise, snitches use it
Motor Vehicle Theft

-unlawful taking or attempt to take a motor vehicle--automobile, van, truck, motorcycle) -89% reportability, best reported of all property crimes
-teenage males most likely to commit
-usually not face-to-face and non-violent, carjacking involves use of force
Fencing
-buying, selling, or dealing in trafficked goods that are a result of robbery, burglary, or larceny/theft
-usually 45-55 years old business man
-law enforcement most likely to be involved
Arson

-willful of malicious burning of a house, public building, motor vehicle, aircraft, or other property
-most common in big cities of economically declining conditions
-motive include crime concealment, revenge, vandalism, and profit
Murder

-the willful and nonnegligent killing of another human being by another
-accounts for only 1.2% of all index crimes
-larger city = higher rate
-manslaughter is without intent (mens rea), perpetrator is usually known to victim

-unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe of bodily injury that does not result in death
-60% reported, less likely to report if perpetrator is known to victim, 51% by strangers
-males more likely to be victimized by strangers, females by partners; males in public, females in private

-violence perpetrated on people because of their perceived race, religion, disability, ethnicity, or sexual orientation
-50% reportability, but 24% increase in occurrence
-gays more likely to be victimzed than lesbians or bi, 64% of victims are homosexuals

-sexual intercourse obtained through the threat or actual use of physical violence
-majority of rapes not reported to police, 43% reportability, 30% involve more than one perpetrator
-female rapists rare; usually assisting rape, male-male rape common in prison
-more likely to be committed by someone known; college campuses, military, jail likely settings

-sexual activity by a legal spouse that is performed against and without consent of the other spouse
-14-25% of women, 50% of women will be battered
-unemployment increases likelihood of battery, poor neighborhoods more likely, black higher rates
-second only to rape by acquaintance, types: 1. common couple violence 2. patriarchal terrorism 3. violent resistance 4. mutual violent control
Gay and Lesbian Partner Battery

-sexual activity or beating by a partner performed against their will of the other partner
-little known due to desire for secrecy
-white males and females between 30-39
-threat of "outing" partner if reported, fewer services and less support for victims
Child and Elder Abuse

-physical, sexual, or emotional neglect of children or elderly
-52% involve girls, 16% is physical, 64% is neglect, 80% by parents
-females more likely to suffer injuries, females abused while males are neglected, abuse increases with age
-elderly abuse includes financial or material expoitation

-cruel treatment of certain species of animals
-unknown prevalence
-young males more likely than females
-tends to coexist with other forms of family violence
