What was the first identifiable Chinese State and when?
Shang dynasty- 1600-1122 BCE
When was the period of major political and social chaos?
Chou dynasty-3rd c BCE. States fought with one another. Daoism emerged under it.
Dao
Tao="way" or "path"="the way of all things"=mysterious source and ordering principle of universe. Present and visible in everything.
When was the date of emergence of Daoism?

Where is Daoism practiced?
Taiwan, Hong Kong, Chinese communities of Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, US (San Francisco)
Qi
"The one"=primordial energy, the breath of life. The life force.
Yin
dark, heavy, obscure, passive, earth, death, and feminine. The receptiveaspect of the universe that expresses itself in silence, darkness, coolness, and rest.
Yang
light, warm, airy, active, life, heaven, and masculine. The active aspect of reality that expresses itself in speech, light, and heat.
Taiji diagram
yin-yang symbol (11th c CE). Illustrates the unity and interdependence of yin and yang within the Dao. It is the constant, cyclic transformation of yin to yang to ying that gives birth to the manifold forms of the universe.
Purpose of Daoist practice
Learn how to control qi. Goal is to ally oneself to the yang pattern of light-male-heaven. Also cultivate yin quality of femaleness. Female-yin energies nurture and vitalize male-yang energies. Powerful divinities may be called down to revitalize us.
Tai-chi ch'uan
developed in the 18 c CE as a training for martial arts. Helps to channel qi to body organs and revitalize them. Practiced by Chinese at damn and dusk for their health.
Shang Ti
Shang dynasty, ruler of the Universe, NOT a creator God. Supreme ancestor of the Chinese + ancestor of ruling Shang family. Guarantor of moral order. King=chief priest and diviner.
Mandate of Heaven
T'ien ming. Chou dynasty, more impersonal designation for concept of heavenly power. A virtuous family may be obligated by heaven to rule. Special relationship based on merit, not birth. Until 1906 the Emperor was known as the Son of Heaven. Heaven, earth, and the emperor linked together.

Laozi
6th c BCE. legendary sage, wrote scripture =Daodejing. "The classic of the way and its power"=Zhuang Zi. Legendary founder of Daoism.
Daodejing
The Classic of the Way and its Power. 4th-3rd c BCE. Scripture. Laozi is author. Tao Te Ching. The classic scripture of Daoism.
Wu-wei
non-action, inaction, non-purposefulness=refraining from overly agressive action. Action without ego-assertion. Having no ambitions.
What does wu-wei mean in government?
non interference
Zhuang Zi
4th c BCE. Master Chuang=Laozi. Nature is above culture. The individual is above society. Less political than Daodejing. Focused mainly on the individual path to liberation. Total detachment from society and civilization. Judgments are relative. Life is delusion. Author of Zhuangzi.
The Way of the Celestial Masters
1st c-2nd c CE. Western Chine. Founder=Zhang Daoling (healer). Group still exists today in Taiwan. Secret society, strict hierarchy. Goal: attain longevity thru faith healing, meditative trance, and aichemy. Accepted minorities and women in the ranks of parish leadership.
Zhang Daoling
founder of the way of the celestial masters. Celestial Master. Personally ordained by Laozi who appeared to him out of the spirit world. Discovered formula for portion of immortality. Ascended alive to heaven from top of dragon-tiger mountain. Mt. Long-hu in Jiangxi.
The Yellow Turbans
headed by Zhang Jue 2nd c CE. They conquered the Yellow River in eastern Chine. The way of great peace. Yin and yang were no longer in balance in heaven and on earth. A new "yellow heaven" mandate was to replace the Han dynasty mandate.
The Celestial Worthies
The three purities. Hold courts in celestial paradises. Govern a complex hierarchy of lesser Gods. Among them is Laozi. First category of deities.
The Eight Immortals
second category of Daoist deities. Human beings who have become immortals and Gods. Among them is the Maiden immortal.
Shen
The God of the Stove. Second category of Daoist deities.
