Theater R1B: The Global Actor Answer the following questions: -What is acting? -What is the role of the actor? In this class, we will: - Use a continued engagement with those questions to develop our capacity as analytical writers and researchers. - Work with play texts, histories of acting, performance exercises, documentaries, and more. -Develop our critical faculties to uncover questions and problems to be engaged through a research process. What kinds of writing will we do? -Script/Textual Analysis -Literature Reviews -Performance Reviews -Research Paper Proposal -Annotated Bibliography -Abstract -Research Paper ??all languages of acting need to be constantly (re)considered in relation to the particular context of their use and the degree to which a language can help us to make sense of the complexities of the bodymind?s relationship to action/acting, and to the ideology implicit in any kind of acting?[Thus] we can celebrate the freedom of not having to find a universal language of once and for all. Rather we can spend our energy on the continuing challenge of searching for languages of acting which best allow one to actualize a particular paradigm of performance in a particular context for a particular purpose.? Phillip Zarrilli, Acting (Re)Considered: A Theoretical and Practical Guide True or False: There is one reliable and effective method of training and practicing as an actor. You can trace the evolution of training in theater and performance in one unbroken tradition that leads to the ?truth? of the art. The actor should only think with his mind and his emotions. The actor should only think with his body. Some roles of the actor in cultures around the world: Actor as imitator Actor as shaman/religious figure Actor as entertainer Actor as educator Actor as critic We will explore the varying roles of the actor through four units: 1. Modern European Acting Theory 2. Postwar European Avant-Garde Performance 3. Japanese Theatre 4. South Asian Performance For next class: Write a one-page account of the most impressive/moving/disturbing/striking actor performance you have ever seen. This can be in the context of theater, film, dance, street performance, performance art, etc. What is it about this performer that has stuck in your head? What are some qualities of the actor that you could name? (Presence, intensity, commitment, etc.) We will share these at the beginning of the class We will focus briefly on acting training in the United States for the professional theatre. We will consider the role of the researcher in theater and performance studies and the world at large.
