Note: This is an answer that I thought up by myself. Some sections of each question are to be composed independently. Make your own examples for these, as Prof. Evans requires. 7. A. An area on campus with a predicted high crime rate is the suspension bridge behind Sibley. It has a run-down building close to it, many areas that a criminal could conceal themselves, as well as winding road that does not allow you to look down it, with decreased surveillance. The surveillance is even more decreased because after the bridge, there is absolutely no lighting at night and many trees to block view. The run down building indicates because the area is not being taken care of, it is an easy place for crime. The criminals feel less exposed because of the decreased surveillance. B. The most critical physical element for this campus area is the lack of surveillance is the winding road, with trees blocking view, as well as lack of lighting at night. When there is a lack of surveillance, people cannot see and moniter the area and criminals feel less exposed. Criminals, being rational, would be more likely to commit crimes here. In the Ohio State Crime study, it was shown that fear of crime is highest when there is high concealment and low surviellance and that areas that both of these characteristics had 84% of crimes in the study occuring there. C. To increase surveillance, there would be lighting installed to allow people to monitor the territory at night on this road leading from the foot bridge. In addition, there will be open areas added (tree removed) so you could see the area around you and not worry about criminal concealment when walking on the road.
