- Strengthen core
Temporomadibular Joint Dysfunction
- Massage may aid in stress reduction
- Use caution with pressure
- Massage muscles of mastication
- Cause could be as far away as the hips or feet
Tension Headache
- If underlying pathology is the cause, massage is contraindicated.
- Beware of heat therapies
- Cold therapies may decrease fluids
- Beware of medication side effects
- Trapezius and SCM can be the most common cause of headaches
Bone Fracture
- Use common sense
- Use energy techniques over casted fracture
- Massage may minimize compensation patterns
- Use reflexive massage to help casted area
Contracture
- Use caution with pressure
- Friction or stretching can be used to break up adhesions
- Broad strokes can increase blood flow
Fibromyalgia
- Massage can support a multidisciplinary approach
- Pressure must be appropriate for the client at that time
- May need to vary session length
Osteoporosis
- Massage can offer much symptomatic relief
- Use caution with pressure techniques
- Use caution with joint movement and joint mobilizations
Scoliosis
- Massage can be used to relax tight muscles and increase blood flow to fatigued muscles.
- Deep muscle stripping and myofascial release can be used to stretch shortened muscles.
- Positioning of the client may need be to be adjusted
Whiplash
- Acute stage massage is contraindicated
- Reflexive massage can assist healing
- Use caution with stretching techniques
- Cryotherapy can reduce edema
Sprain
- Dont overstretch area
- RICE
- Cross fiber friction can aid in rehabilitation
Migraine Headache
- If underlying pathology is the cause, massage is contraindicated.
- Beware of heat therapies
- Cold therapies may decrease fluids
- Beware of medication side effects
- Trapezius and SCM can be the most common cause of headaches
Ganglion Cyst
- Use caution with pressure in the area
Adhesive Capsulitis
- Ice and heat therapies
- Stretching and traction to the capsule
- Massage the muscle surrounding the joint

- Massage is contraindicated in acute stages

- When inflammation subsides, use massage and friction on the muscles surrounding the joint

Shin Splints
- Ice therapy
