What is vision and how do we paint it.
This shows us a whole new mindset. It’s a level of complexity. --Not just optics, but thinking of the viewer in how they will look at it. (we look in, the work looks out) There’s a lot left outside of the picture plane—left to the imagination of the viewer.

Mary is marrying into the french royal family. She commissions this piece to elevate her status. Above her is the angel of fame. This is all very ceremonial. He also prided himself in painting flesh. In the bottom it shows neptune and his daughters. Again, notice his vivacious brush strokes <--this is why he was sought after!

This is religious imagery in a very different way. It's large scale, but it's subdued. The emotion is very simple and straightforwards. The figures wear caps and capes of oriental flair. (These props actually reappear..)

He was well-known for his engravings. There are big deep dark lines in some areas, and light soft areas other places. It's nicknamed the 100 guilder print. Our perspective is that we're peeking in--spying. The woman is very worried, and the woman is almost gloating. There's a sort of power switch. Emphasis on light, optics, visual effects. He used a camereera obscura. Using a sort of dark room to copy picture onto paper and trace it. Like Leonardo, he kept props and used them (the map.. etc)

Still life became associated with the dutch for a long time after. Clara is considered the pioneer of still life. All the objects were that of great worth. The middle classmen of the time may have had the wealth... people who were just plowing fields a generation ago. She pays expert attention to lighting--the idea that the light comes in and traces the forms--BAROQUE. Notice the scale--not large.
