Natural Rights 1.1

Rights all humans are born with that cannot be morally taken away by any form of government.

Social contract Theory 1.1

Is an implied contract between gonvernment and citizens.

-it states that people agree to give up certain freedoms and empower government to maintain order.

Inalienable Rights 1.1

Are natural rights that government cannot be taken away.

Is a document formally declaring the United States an independent country.

The Articles of confederation 1.2

Was the original body of laws governing the US.

-This document failed because it did not give enough power to the federal government.

Shay's rebellion 1.2

Occured in 1786 because the state of Massachuettes raised taxes in order to pay off war debt.

The United States Constitution 1.2

Was created in 1787 when s delegation met in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation.

-they proposed a federal government made up of three branches:

1. legislative branch- to make the laws .

2. executive branch - to enforce the laws.

3. judicial branch -to make sure that the laws were administered fairly.

The Three- Fifths Compromise 1.2

Stated that each slave would count as "three fifths of a person"

Ex. for every five slaves, a state would be credited for having three people.

Was an agreement in which Northerners and delegates from the Upper South (Maryland and Virginia) who opposed the slave agreed to allow it to continue for 20 years.

Was the the faction that opposed the federalists and wanted to see stronger state gov.

Were a series of essays by Hamilton and Madison.

Legislative Branch 1.3

known as Congress, is one of the three branches of gov.

House of Reprsentatives 1.3

Is one of the two houses of Congress. Population determines how many reprsentatives each state has. The greater a state's population, the more reprsentatives that state has.

Speaker of the House 1.3

Is elected by the House of Representativeand is usually from the majority party to preside over House every two years.

Senate 1.3

is the second house Congress and is comprised of two senators from each state.

President Pro Tempore 1.3

is usually the most senoir member of the majority party and is the highest ranking member of the Senate. He/She presides over the Senate in the vice president's absence.

Power of Congress 1.3

include the power to impeach public officials, the power officials, the power to try impeachment cases and decide the guilt or innocence of impeached public officials.

Limitations of Congress 1.3

include the inability bto pass legislative actas convicting people of a crime without a trial, Congress may not establish.

House/Senate majority leader 1.3

is the elected leader of the majority party in each house of Congress

leads the minority party in each house of Congress

are powers explicity granted granted by the Constitution.

The Supremacy Clause 1.4

states that the US Constitution shall be "...the supreme law of the land..." and take preceence over any state or local laws.
