what is a functional hearing loss?

aka non organic hearing loss; a hearing loss that does not appear to have organic causes

what are CHL symptoms?

fluctuating hearing loss; good word recognition; can hear well in noise; titinnus; speaks softly

what are cochlear SNHL symptoms?

speaks loudly; poor word recognition; difficulty hearing in noise; titinnus; recruitment

what are the symptoms of MHL?

mainly like the sensorineural symptoms but may have some conductive like fluctuating hearing loss

what are the symptoms of central hearing loss?

more difficulty hearing in noise than in quiet; difficulty with sound localization; auditory processing problems

what are the symptoms of functional hearing loss (psuedohypacisus)?

will complain of hearing loss; not consistently; usually looking for a medical or financial benefits

what is pure tone threshold testing?

measures sensetivity of the ear to diffferent frequencies of sound; the threshold is considered to be the lowest intensity sound a person can detect 50% of the time

what is an audiogram?

a graphic representation of the persons hearing sensetivity at different frequencies

what is speech testing?

the lowest intensity required for the individual to hear and understand speech; the ability to make fine phonemic differentiations "death" vs "deaf"

what is site of lesion testing?

looking for the exact location of the lesion in the auditory system

what are the results of an audiological evaluation?

degree of loss, type of loss, nature of loss

what is considered to be the degree of loss?

how much does the persons hearing deviate from normal

what is considered to be the type of loss?

conductive, sensorineural, central, mixed; where is the site of the lesion

what is considered to be the nature of the loss?

how does it interfere with their ability to participate in normal aural/oral human communication

what are types of audiological rehabilition?

amplification, auditory communication training, visual communication training, counseling

what is auditory communication training?

helping the individual use the device and to understand the distorted signal to the best of their ability; you have to retrain their brains and use the signal to understand communication

what is visual communication training?

teaching the person to understand the thoughts of others using visual components of everyday human communication; lipreading, sign language, gestures, environment/clothing
