What is the focus of social justice?

On the redistribution of resources to ensure fairness in meeting the basic needs of people. Has to do with distributing society’s benefits and burdens

What is the difference between positive rights and negative rights?

Negative rights- seek to protect the individual from others interfering with one’s effort to build a future of the individuals choice

Positive rights- believes that people also have the rights to food, clothing, medical care, education, and housing. They are statements of entitlement.

What were Adam Smith’s views on economic justice?

The importance of self-interest but insisted that it was balanced by something called morel sentiments. Justice is desired not to harm others, a desire for approval from others, and all above a useful way to make society stable.

What do Social Darwinists believe about economic inequality?

Were leery of perpetuating the weaker sorts, and poverty was seen as a sign that the person was not well equipped to compete in society

What are some of the issues related to gender and justice?

Rape, prostitution, and harassment, childbearing, domestic violence, lesbian identity, economic equality, and standards of beauty

Historically, how have many societies viewed rape?

Rape was seen to be significant male in the raped woman’s life- father, husband, king. Woman had to prove there was a struggle.

What are some of the issues associated with racial justice?

People had a fear of something strange or new. The prejudice of Arab Americans after the terrorist attack in 2001, skin colors

What happened in the 1890s that was relevant to environmental justice?

Two separate revelations were made: (1) the U.S. Census Bureau announced the frontier, the line separating civilization from wilderness, no longer exist. (2) a group of investigative journalists (muckrakers) began exposing the industrial and corporate world’s exploitation of the nation’s natural and human resources

What is the difference between conservationists and preservationists?

Conservationist- wanted to protect natural resources to ensure their quality for future generations, concerned about the needs of future generations and their rights to the resources.

Preservationist- comprised those who wanted to protect the environment for its own value. Nature oriented and were less concerned with human need and consumptions

What was the significance of Rachel Carson’s books about the environment?

She believed that pesticides were ruining the environment and she argued that public health and the environment were inseparable. She advocated that the issue was too important to be left to the experts; it had to be a public issue.
