What we realized in 1973
We do not have enough oil in the U.S. to run the country and we rely heavily on foreign oil. Big problems occur when our oil supply gets interrupted from another country.
What polices were enacted in 1973?
More federal funding for research and development of energy. Created the Department of Energy.

The National Energy Act of 1978
Set up Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards. Basically forced carmakers to improve gas mileage. This law provided some incentives and tax breaks for energy saving products to homeowners. No provisions were made in this law to deal with energy independence.
Energy Policy in the 1980's
Environmental policy was relaxed. Conservation of energy was not a priority.
Energy Policy in the 2000's
Tax credits for purchasing a Hybrid Vehicle. Increrased funding for research and development of Hydrogen Fueled Vehicles. Tax credits for installing high efficiency home furnaces and air conditioners. Additional tax credits for the use of alternative and renewal sources. Funding for expanding Nuclear Power.
The 1974 Safe Drinking Water Act
Established minimum standards for drinking water quality from EPA.

Carbon Monoxide, from gasoline engines.
Sulfur Dioxide, from burning fuels containing sulfur.

A process in which coal in its solid state is turned in to liquid fuel similar to diesel or gasoline.
Nuclear Power
Nuclear Power occurs when atoms are split and energy is created. Very efficient.

Democrats are more likely to protect the environment than businesses
Republican views on environmental policy
Republicans are more likely to protect businesses over the environment
White Collar Crime
Non-violent crime that usually involves large sums of money. Crimes such as stock fraud, and commercial theft.
Street Crimes
Traditional type crimes that occur such as: Robbery, Burglary, Rape, Murder, Assault, and Theft.

Drug Use, Prostitution, and Gambling
Exclusionary Rule
The principle that evidence obtained through illegal search and seizure may not be admitted in a court of law. (Comes from the 4th amendment.)
Reasons for crime
The more things that are declared illegal, the greater the crime rate will be. The number of illegal activities has increased over time.

How can poor people be poor and still be working?
Poor people generally do work, its just they cannot make enough to support themselves and their family. Poor people many times lack the skills to get a higher paying job and struggle to ever improve their income situation.
Conservative views on poverty
If you are an adult who is healthy, and poor it is because you lack the self-discipline to work hard, save, and to delay immediate pleasures for a better future. The poor generally choose to not pursue educational and employment opportunities available to everyone.
Liberal views on poverty
The only difference between the two is the poor simply lack the opportunities for education, employment, job training, and decent housing.
What are the consequences of poverty in Texas?
Lack of education is a cause of poverty. 49% of Texans living in poverty who had less than a high school education, claim they can't afford college.
Governmental solutions for poverty
Unemployment Compensation, cash benefits, and in kind benefits.
Earned income credit
This program allows a taxpayer to receive a credit from the government for each dollar earned up to a certain point. Maximum credit is $5657 for 2010.
Food Stamps
Coupons or credit is given to needy families to purchase food. No cash is given.
Governmental housing programs
Housing and Urban Development, Rental Assistance, Subsidized Child Care.
In Kind Benefit
A benefit where a tangible benefit is given but no cash is given.
Cash Benefit
Simply a transfer of money from the government to an individual.
Differences between Western Europe and U.S. in terms of welfare benefits
Europe has subsidized housing, health service, and child care. Not only for the poor but for most citizens. In the U.S. services are provided on the basis of minimum. This difference produces higher levels of poverty in the U.S. than most prosperous nations.
Poverty
Those whose place in society is such that they are internal exiles who: almost inevitably, develop attitudes of defeat and pessimism, and who are therefore excluded from takinng advantage of new opportunities.
Poverty Line
In 2009:
$22,050 for a family of four.
$10,830 for a family of one.
$40,750 for a family of nine of more.
