Art 105 Describing the World -Words and images describe the world images represent the world in a representation. Things in the real world are literally represented Representational- the (the more the work) represents real things in the real world the more representational or realistic it is said to be. Naturalistic and illusionistic are realistic. Abstract- the less a work resembles real things in a real world the more abstract it is said to be. Abstract art does not duplicate the world it reduces the world to its essential qualities Non-objective- these images are without reference to the objective world. Purely non-objective art is concerned only with questions of form Iconography -The study of description of visual images or symbolic systems is called iconography. Every culture has its specific iconography, practices its own system of images that are understood by the culture at large to mean specific things Meaning- symbolism Mudra-symbolic hang gestures
