Generalized Anxiety disorder
Irene had a 3.7 GPA but she felt like she would fail every test. She began to drop every test because she was fearful of not understanding the material. she was also concerned about relationships and with friends, her health(because she was hypertensive)
Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia
Mrs. M was 67 years old and lived in a second floor walk-up apartment and has not left her apartment in 20 years, she has suffered with this disorder for 30 years. She has been confined to her bedroom and relies on her daughter to bring groceries once a week.
Social Phobia
Billy was a great student but he had no friends, he was unwilling to attend. He felt sick to his stomach whenever the teacher wanted to call on him. His teachers were unable to get anything but a yes-or-no answer from him.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Richard was a college freshman majoring in philosophy and withdrew from school because of his incapacitating ritualistic behavior. Believed that all food were contaminants, he left his room infrequently, and avoided the toilet at all costs.
Hypochondriasis
Gail was married at 21 and complained after he marriage that she was having anxiety and stress. Anytime she had minor symptoms such as a headache she was afraid she was having a serious illness
Somatization Disorder
Linda felt she had a number of chronic infections that nobody could properly diagnose. After developing unexplained paralysis in her legs, Linda was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, and after a year she regained her ability to walk.
Conversion Disorder
Elois had difficulty walking that developed over 5 years. Her right leg had given way and she began falling, Gradually, the condition worsened to the point that 6 months before her admission to the hospital Eloise could move around by only crawling
Malingering
Celia suddenly was unable to see. Slowly thereafter, she regained some of her sight, but her vision was so severely blurred that she could not read. she was brought to a clinic for testing and the psychologists arranged a series of vision tests and she scored perfectly.
Pain Disorder
A medical student had severe abdominal pain of several weeks duration. The student claimed no past history of similar pain. Physical examinations revealed no physical problems, but she told the physician that she had separated from her husband
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Jim was diagnosed with social phobia in his 20s. Jim was a good looking, slightly depressed; his mental status exam did not reveal any problems. However he was convinced that everyone was staring at his body; thought his head was square and wore hats to hide it.
Depersonalization Disorder
Bonnie, a dance teacher says when she demonstrates the step, she just feels like its not really her and that she doesn't have control of her legs. Sometimes she feels like she is standing in back of herself just watching.
Dissociative Amnesia
A woman came to one of the clinics. The father was a heavy drinker, her son was a burden on the family, and she was considered the peacemaker of the family. Overtime she began to lose her memory every time a fight occurred in the home.
Paranoid Personality Disorder
Jakes lack of success in school was partly attributable to his failure to take responsibility for his poor grades. He began to develop conspiracy theories about fellow students and professors, believing they worked together to see him fail.
Schizoid Disorder
A 39 year-old scientist often withdrew to his room, began drinking on his own. He was orphaned at 3 and raised by his aunt until 9, he excelled at physics, but chess was his only contact with others. He made no close friends but was indifferent to it.
Schizoid Personality Disorder
Mr. S believed that he couldn't eat anything that was contaminated by a machine, began to study alternative ideas and eastern religion. Afterwards he began to go his own food and research the origins and mechanisms of food contamination. Others followed him.
