Membranous fold that anchors the tongue to the floor of the mouth.
What are the 2 cell types of Salivary Glands & what do they do?
Serous - Makes Amylase (digests carbs)
Mucous - Makes mucus
What are the 3 major Glands & describe
1. Parotid (largest)
2. Submandibular glands - Floor of mouth secretes serous fluid.
3. Sublingual - Back of tongue, secretes mucus beneath the tongue.
What and where are the 4 parts of the stomach
1. Cardiac - near esophageal opening
2. Fundic - Pouch that extends
3. Body - Main part
4. Pyloric Sphincter - Located between the pylorus and duodenunm into small intestine.
What are the 3 gastric secretions
1. Cephalic - Before food enters stomach
2. Gastric - In stomach
3. Intestinal - Small intestine
What is Cholecystokinin
Hormone made in the Small Intestine because there are fats present, causing contraction of the gallbladder, release of bile, and secretion of pancreatic digestive enzymes
Where are bicarbonate ions found?
Pancreatic Juice
What does the liver store and what is its function
Glycogen, Iron & vitamins A, D, B12
Destroys worn out RBC
Removes toxins and secretes bile
Emulsification
Breaking down of fat globules into smaller droplets.
first preparation of fat for chemical digestion by specific enzymes.
What are the 3 parts of the Small Intestine
1. Duodenum (beneath the stomach)
2. Jejunum (abdominal cavity in the middle)
3. Ileum (between jejunum and large intestine)
What is mesentery
Double layered fold of peritoneum in the abdominal wall, supports blood vessels, nerves and lymph vessels.
What is Lacteal
A lymph capillary
What are brunner glands, where are they and what do they do?
Mucous-secreting glands in the submucosa of the duodenum.
They secrete alkaline mucus.
What is the most important absorbing organ?
Small Intestine
Segmentation?
Major mixing movement of the small intestine.
Where is the Ileocecal Sphincter located?
Joins the ileum and cecum
What are the 4 parts of the large intestine and their location?
1. Ascending Colon - Right Side
2.Transverse Colon - Middle
3.Descending Colon - Left Side
4.Sigmoid Colon - S shaped portion of the colon
What muscle is Internal/External sphincter made up of?
Internal - Smooth
External - Skeletal
What is Intestinal Flora
Bacterial population that exisits in the large intestine.
Which salivary glands produce the most viscous saliva with lots of mucus?
Sublingual
Intrinsic factor is secreted by which cells of the gastric glands?
Parietal
During which stage of gastric secretion do gastric glands actually begin secreting gastric juice?
Cephalic
Where is the least amount of bacteria found?
Stomach
The pancreatic duct connects to the what?
Duodenum
Where are the lacteals located?
Small Intestine
Which gastrointestinal layer is characterized by having tough, fibrous connective tissue?
Serosa
Which intestinal layer accounts for the action of the peristaltic waves?
Muscularis
What is the stimulus for cholecystokinin release?
Lipids
What blocks pancreatic secretions from entering the duodenum?
Sphincter of Oddi
