Somatoform Disorder

disorder in which there is an apparent physical disorder for which there is no organic basis

Conversion Disorder

When a dramatic specific disability has no physical cause and instead seems related to psychological problems

Hypochondriasis

A condition in which a person interpret small and insignificant symptoms as signs of a serious illness

Anxiety Disorder

Disorder where anxiety is a characteristic feature, or the avoidance of anxiety seems to motivate abnormal behavior

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Condition in which episodes of anxiety, sleeplessness, and nightmares are the result of some disturbing event in the past

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Disorder in which a person feels compelled to think disturbing thoughts and perform senseless rituals

Phobia

Excessive, unreasonable fear attached to an apparently harmless stimulus

Agoraphobia

Excessive fear of being alone and, in some cases, of leaving home and being in public places

Affective Disorders

Conditions in which there is a disturbance in affect, or emotional state

Depression

· A person is overwhelmed by feelings of sadness, apathy, guilt, and self-reproach

Mania

A person is overwhelmed by feelings of sadness, apathy, guilt, and self-reproach

Bipolar Disorder

When a person experiences periods of both depression and mania

Also known as Manic-Depression

Dissociative Disorders

Disorder in which some aspect of the personality seems fragmented from the rest

Loss of memory from past events

Fugue

Involving flight from home and the assumption of a new identity, with amnesia for past events and identity

Multiple Personallity Disorder (MPD)

Condition in which more than one personality seems present in a single person

Dissociative Identity Disorder

Condition in which a person feels unreal or unconnected from his or her body

Personality Disorders

Disorders in which inflexible and maladaptive ways of thinking cause distress to the person and/or conflicts with others

Schizoid Personality Disorder

A person withdrawn and lacks feeling for others

Paranoid Personality Disorder

A person is inappropriately suspicious and mistrustful of others

Avoidant Personality Disorder

A person fears of refection by others leads to social isolation

Anti-Social Personality Disorder

Involves a pattern of violent, criminal, or unethical and exploitative behavior and an inability to feel affection for others

SZ Disorganized Type

SZ Catatonic Type

SZ Paranoid

SZ Undifferentiated

SZ Residual Type

Diagnosis of Disorganized Type

The greatest degree of psychological disorganization. They have frequent disorganized speech; they show disorganized behavior and have “silly” moods

Diagnosis of Catatonic Type

characterized by a psychomotor disturbance. Key term is WAXY FLEXIBILITY

Diagnosis of Paranoid Type

defined as people who have delusions of persecution and grandiosity. These people think others are constantly after them plotting evil things against them. They hallucinate and hear voices.

Diagnosis of Undifferentiated Type

This “wastebasket” category consists of individuals who cannot be placed in any of the previous categories

Diagnosis of Residual Type

These patients have at least one SZ episode in the past and is currently showing signs of SZ such as blunted emotions, social withdraw and strange behavior.

Phases of Schizophrenia

Prodromal Phase

Active Phase

Residual Phase

Prodromal

This precedes the full-blown phase of SZ

Active

Symptoms are clear cut and prominent. This phase sees hallucinations, delusions and disorganization becomes clear

Residual

This phase still sees hallucination and delusions but the actual diagnosis of this phase is less concrete.

Psycho-Sexual Disorder

Loss of impairment of ordinary physical responses of sexual function

Paraphilias

Unconventional objects or situations that cause sexual arousal in some people, men under 40 years old

Fethishism

Reliance on Non-Human objects as the preferred or exclusive method of achieving sexual excitement

Voyeurism

Desire to watch other people having sex or spying on nude people

Exhibitionism

Compulsion to expose one’s genitals in public to achieve sexual desire.

Transvestism

Dressing in the clothing of the opposite sex to achieve gratification.

Transsexuals

Rejection of one’s biological sex gender and the desire to become a member of the opposite sex.
