Hydrocodone Bitartrate with Acetaminophen
- Lortab, Vicodin, Lorcet, Norco
- Opioid Analgesic
- Dizzy, drowsy, constipation, nausea, vomit
- Drowsy, don't operate machinery
- avoid alcohol
- food/milk to avoid upset stomach
- HABBIT FORMING
- skip missed dose and continue normal
Levothyroxine Sodium
- Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid
- Hormone/ Thyroid
- Overdose side effects = hypermetabolic states (endogenous origin), fever hypoglycemia, heart failure, fluid loss, tachycardia, anxiety, insomnia
- Don't discontinue therapy
- notify if signs of hyperthyroidism
- nonpermanent loss of hair in children
- Take missed dose ASAP unless closer to next dose. DONT DOUBLE DOSES!!
Simvastatin
- Zocor
- Antihyperlipidemic (HMG-Coa reductase)
- Constipation, MUSCLE PAIN, dyspepsia (indigestion)
- notify if myopathy
- follow diet
- photosensitivity
- Don't become pregnant
- limit alcohol
- take missed dose ASAP. If taken w/in 12 hrs of next does, skip next dose and return
Omeprazole
- Prilosec
- Gastric Antisecretory (PPI)
- back pain, cough, constipation, rash, dizzy
- take 30 mins before eating
- antacids okay at same time
- Take missed dose ASAP. Skip missed dose if closer to next. DON'T DOUBLE DOSES!!
- add to 1 Tbsp applesauce, swallow immediately then drink cool water. DONT CRUSH
Lisinopril
- Prinivil, Zestril
- Antihypertensive (ACE Inhibitor)
- Dizzy, Headache, Fatigue, Cough, Diarrhea
- Take regardless of meals
- Do not discontinue
- Avoid non-Rx cough, cold, allergy meds
- Avoid potassium salts
- Take missed dose ASAP. If missed dose is closer to next. DON'T DOUBLE DOSES
- Notify if swelling
Zolpidem Tartrate
- Ambien, Ambien CR
- Sedative (Binds GABA receptors)
- Headache, drowsy, nausea, dry mouth, allergy, back pain, influenza simptoms, dyspepsia, diarrhea, constipation, myalgia, UR Infections, UTI..... LOTS more
- Don't crush Ambien CR
- Don't operate machinery and avoid alcohol
- HABIT FORMING
Sertraline Hydrochloride
- Zoloft
- Antidepressant (serotonin reuptake inhibitor)
- Nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia, tremor, dizzy, insomnia, sweating
- Continued therapy needed for improvement/ Don't stop
- Oral concentrate needs dilution. Place dose in 4 oz water, ginger aile, lemon/lime soda, lemonade, orange juice ONLY. Take immediately
- avoid alcohol
- avoid tasks needing mental awareness
- consult before taking OTCs
- skip missed dose and return to normal
- watch mood/behavior changes
Albuterol Sulfate
- Proventil, Ventolin, Proair
- Antiasthmatic (increases adenylyl cyclase and cAMP = relaxation)
- nausea, vomiting, nervous, headache, insomnia, tremor, dizzy, HT, tachycardia
- Don't take more than directed
- don't put in eyes
- shake well before taking and reference for inhaling technique
- clean mouthpiece once weekly. Remove canister, run in warm water and air dry
Duloxetine Hydrochloride
- Cymbalta
- Antidepressant (serotonin and NE reuptake and some dopamine reuptake)
- Nausea, dry mouth, constipation, insomnia, dizzy, diarrhea, decreased appetite
- may take 4 weeks to work/ DONT STOP
- Drowsiness/ no alcohol
- Consult before using OTCs
- skip missed doses and return to normal
- watch change in mood/behavior
- need up to 2 weeks for noticeable improvement
Metformin Hydrochloride
- Glucophage, Glucophage XR
- Antidiabetic (slows glucose absorption, gluconeogenesis, and improves insule sensitive)
- decreased vitamin B12 absorption, LACTIC ACIDOSIS (hyperventilation, myalgia, malaise, weird somnolence), diarrhea, vomiting, nausea. Gi effects at first.
- Take with meals
- dont drink all the time or binge drink
- follow diet and exercise
- if miss dose more than by few hrs, skip and return to normal
- keep well hydrated
Amlodipine Besylate
- Norvasc
- Antihypertensive (Ca channel blocker)
- Edema, flushing, headache, fatigue, abdominal pain
- Meals don't matter
- take missed dose ASAP. If w/in 12 hrs of next dose, skip next and return normal
- Don't take OTC cough, cold with consultation
- DONT STOP THERAPY
Bupropion Hydrochloride
- Wellbutrin, Zyban
- Antidepressant (weak serotonin, NE, dopamine reuptake inhibitor)
- Dizzy, Constipation, wt loss, dry mouth, insomnia, sweating, agitation, TREMER
- take immediate release at regular intervals no sooner than 3 to 4 x day
- take ER i morning to avoid insomnia (don't crush)
- if miss dose, wait until next scheduled dose DO NOT DOUBLE DOSES
- No OTCs w/o consulting
- no alcohol
- wt loss or gain is temporary
- watch mood (2 weeks at lease to see improvement)
Prednisone
- Deltasone
- Anti-inflammatory (alters DNA transcription)
- Blurred vision, upset stomach, nausea, fluid and electrolyte disturbances, cushings syndrome, increased susceptibility to infection, osteoporosis, suppress growth in children, adrenal suppression.....
- take as prescribed/ don't discontinue
- take with food/milk if GI upset occurs
- take missed dose ASAP
Amoxicillin Trihydrate
- Amoxil, Moxatag, Trimox (generic available)
- Antibiotic (acylates transpeptidase enzyme)
- nausea, vomitting, DIARRHEA, hives, itching, RASH
- empty stomach with full glass of water (240mL)
- take at even intervals ATC (Around The Clock)
- Complete full course of therapy
- keep refrigerated/ good for 14 days
- shake well
- take missed dose ASAP
Atorvastatin Calcium
- Lipitor (no generic)
- Antihyperlipidemic (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor)
- Constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, myopathy
- closely follow prescribed diet
- photosensitivity
- dont get pregnant
- limit alcohol
- take missed dose ASAP. If more than 8 hrs pass, skip and return to normal.
Alprazolam
- Xanax (XR) (generic available)
- Antianxiety Agent (facilitates inhibitory NT action of GABA)
- drowsiness and hypotension
- avoid operating machinery and alcohol
- HABBIT FORMING
- skip missed doses and return to normal
- XR tablets should not be discontinued abruptly or crushed
Citalopram Hydrobromide
- Celexa (generic available)
- Antidepressant (serotonin reuptake inhibitor)
- nausea, dry mouth, somnolence, insomnea, diarrhea...
- impairs cognitive and motor performance/ avoid alcohol
- 2 weeks needed for effects to be seen
- Don't stop taking
- skip missed dose and return to normal
- watch change in mood
Azithromycin Dihydrate
- Zithromax, Zmax (generic available)
- Macrolide Antibiotic (binds 50s ribosomal subunit and stops prtn synthesis)
- DIARRHEA, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain. IV = pain at injection site and inflamm
- meals don't matter
- don't take antacids within 1 hr of administration
- report severe diarrhea
- take missed dose ASAP and continue as normal
- shake suspensions
Hydrochlorothiazide
- HydroDiuril, Microzide (generic available)
- Diuretic (inhibits reabsorption of Na and Cl at distal renal tubule)
- dry mouth, MUSCLE CRAMPS, WEAKNESS, nausea, vomiting, anemia, dizzy, orthostatic hypotension, diarrhea, constipation, hyperglycemia, photosensitivity, blurred vision
- food/milk if GI is upset
- usually given in morning. TIMING of dose is important bc of increased diuresis
- avoid excessive exposure to sunlight
- if missed dose, skip it and return to normal
Clonazepam
- Klonopin (generic available)
- Antiepileptic (GABA inducer)
- Drowsy, ataxia, fatigue
- Drowsiness - Caution
- avoid alcohol
- HABBIT FORMING
- Don't abruptly stop
- Take missed dose ASAP. If closer to next dose, skip missed then return to normal
