What are estrogens primarily used for?
contraception and for menopausal HRT

Who are contraindicated for estrogen?
pts with estrogen-dependent cancers, undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding, active thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders or a history of estrogen-associated thrombophlebitis, thrombosis, or thromboembolic disorders. they are also contraindicated during pregnancy.
What are the routes of estrogen?
oral, IM, IV, transdermal, intravaginal
What is the most common adverse effect of estrogen?
nausea, this deminishes with time. can be reduced by taking with food or at night.
Endometrial hyperplasia and cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cardiovascular events
What are the progestins
Levonorgestrel, Medroxyprogesterone acetate, megestrol acetate, norethindrone, norethindrone acetate, norgestimate, norgestrel, 17- Hydroxyprogeserone caproate.
What is the therapeutic goal of progestins
used for contraception and to counteract endometrial hyperplasia that could be caused by unopposed estrogen during HRT. otheruses include dysfunctional uterine bleeding, amenorrhea, endometriosis, and support of pregnancy in women with corpus leteum deficiency. .
What is the baseline data before giving a progestin
breast and pelvic examinations
When are progestins contraindicated?
in the presence of undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding, relative contraindications include active thrombophlebitis or a history or thromboembolic disorders, active liver disease, and carcinoma of the breast.
