- No real understanding of culture
- Source material may be limited, most often viewpoint of conquerors

Flora, fauna, geologic resources (hindrance vs. resource)
Anthropology
Outgrowth of Natural History, colonial efforts, interactions with native populations
Formalized discipline during 19 & 20 centuries
Focus on "primitive" peoples, oppressed/overlooked groups
Shortcomings:
- Synchronic view of limited time span
- Neglect of non-anthropology sources
- Too much emphasis on native perspectives
