What are some changes during succession?

plant size increase, diversity inc then dec, productivity dec, efficency of nutrient cycling increases

Disturbance

discrete event that disrupts an ecosystem or community (can be natural or human-caused) natural: fire, flood -human caused: deforestation -disturbances initiate secondary succession

macroevolution (3 processes)

evolutionary change of lineage; speciation: formation of new species; extinction: loss of species

differential reproduction

individuals with the trait leave more offspring than others in population

Secondary Succession (cont)

classic view: succession proceeds to climax community recent views: succession influenced by variability and chaotic events such that no single climax

microevolution

change in gene frequency within a population

spatial patterning individuals

traits must have genetic basis, passed from generation to generation

Population Dynamics

Changes in population size, density, dispersion and age distribution

Temperature (how is it affected at extremes)

There is an optimum range and if the temp strays too far away from it then it becomes stressed and eventually becomes intolerant

background extinction:

loss of species at a relatively low rate, often due to local changes

Tolerance

Distribution and abundance of a species determined by range of physical or chemical factors

Primary succession

Gradual establishment of biotic(living) communites in an area where no life existed before (ex: succession on newly formed islands)
