Why is the cortex of the brain convoluted?
allows for a big surface area to be tucked into a small area (the skull)
What is the cerebral cortex?
The convoluted and folded up outer area of the brain
-largest and most complex part of the brain
What is the corpus callosum?
Biggest band of tissue connecting the left and right hemispheres of the brain
What is the occipital lobe?
the part of the cerebral cortex located in back of the head
-primary visual cortex
What is the parietal lobe?
the part of the cerebral cortex located at the top of the head and toward the rear
-sensory cortex- sense of touch and body position
What is the frontal lobe?
the part of the cerebral cortex located just behind the forehead
-motor cortex, controls movement
-involved in making plans and judgements
What is Broca's area?
Usually in left hemisphere-controls speech
What is the temporal lobe?
the part of the cerebral cortex located above the ears (sides of head)
-primary auditory cortex-high level processing of hearing
What is the sensory cortex?
The area at the front of the parietal lobes that registers and processes body touch and movement sensations
What is the motor cortex?
An area at the rear of the frontal lobes that controls voluntary movements
What is Wernicke's area?
-part of the temporal lobe
-involved in comprehension and speech
What is Wernicke's Aphasia?
When people don't make sense because they can articulate, but have poor comprehension and repeat things
What is a split brain operation? Why is it performed?
2 hemispheres are isolated by cutting their connecting fibers-mainly the corpus collosum
-performed in order to study the differences and functions of the two hemispheres
What did the split brain operation demonstrate about vision and the identification of objects?
Eyesight: left eye--> right hemisphere, right eye--> left hemisphere
left brain reports what it saw with a word, right brain can point with left hand to what it saw (different things)
In which hemisphere is language usually centered?
left hemisphere
-(90% of right-handed people, 75% of left-handed people have language centered in their left hemisphere)
How is the right hemisphere involved in language?
involved w/ subtleties of language
What functions are associated with the left hemisphere?
language, logic, math
What functions are associated with the right hemisphere?
spatial tasks, music, visual recognition (in art)
-sees the whole picture
Is right-brained and left-brained a valid and reliable way to describe a person's ability and personality?
No, our thoughts, feelings, and actions arise from our specialized yet integrated brain
What did the results of Phineas Gage's injury show?
Phineas Gage-damaged his pre-frontal cortex (tamping bar went through skull
-results of injury showed pre-frontal cortex regulates personality, motivation, decision-making, and executive fcts
What is the extreme frontal area (pre-frontal cortex)?
Involved with personality, decision-making, motivation, and executive functions
What did the results of H.M.'s surgery show?
-surgery removed his hippocampus
-H.M. suffered from epilepsy and had surgery to stop seizures-->lost memory
-results showed that hippocampus relates to memory and is in charge of storing memories
What is a neural network?
A cluster of the brain's neurons in a work group
-allow for short, fast connections
the cells in each layer of a neural network connect w/ various cells in the next layer
What is the endocrine system?
The body's "slow" chemical communication system; a set of glands that secrete hormones into the bloodstream
What are hormones?
Chemical messengers that are manufactured by the endocrine glands, travel through the bloodstream, and affect other tissues
What is the pituitary gland?
The endocrine system's most influential gland. Under the influence of the hypothalamus, the pituitary regulates growth and controls other endocrine glands
Which part of the brain directly influences the pituitary gland?
the hypothalamus
feedback system: brain-->pituitary-->other glands-->hormones-->brain
