What is abnormal?

Anxiety Disorders
- Phobias
Common features
- Irrational fear
- avoidance of phobic situation/object
- out of proportion to any realistic danger
Agoraphobia
- Fear of being in places from which escape/getting help would be difficult in event of sudden incapacitation
- accompanied by panic attacks, depression, obsessions, compulsions
Social phobia
- fear of situations in which a person may be exposed to evaluation by other people
- public speaking
- eating in public
- using public restrooms
- Later complications- drugs/alcohol to calm nerves
- greater risk of addiction
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Presence of obsessions and/or compulsions
- Obsession: persistent thought, image, impulse that are experienced as involuntary (intrusive) & repugnant
- Compulsion: repetitive behavior that typically are designed to ward off feelings of anxiety
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- chronic, general anxiety across situations
Panic Disorder
- periodic panic attacks (intense anxiety attacks)
Post traumatic stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Pattern of anxiety symptoms that develop in response to environmental stressor (trauma)
PTSD: General types
- natural disaster
- human-caused accidents
- car/plane./train
- intentional human caused harm
- physical/sexual, other violent crime
- greatest risk!
Causes of anxiety disorders
- Psychodynamic Perspective
- anxiety is symbolic of a deeper conflict (unconscious)
Behavioral Perspective
- Classical/operant conditioning
- anxiety disorders are learned behavior patterns
Cognitive Perspective
- situation - our thoughts about it - triggers anxiety response
- ex) panic disorders
Humanistic Perspective
- self concept, self-esteem (eval of our self worth)
- Over reliance on other people approval/evaluation
Biological Perspective
- Genetic predisposition - for anxiety disorders
- Neurotransmitters, GABA- major inhibitory Nts
- generalized anxiety dis- often underacting GABA sys
Socio-cultural Perspective
- Socialization - high achievement exspectations (increased risk of anxiety)
- Cultural bound - ex) Taijin kyofusho (japan) phobia
Schizophrenia
- Symptoms
- Thoughts/thinking
- Delusions, incoherent thinking, invention of words
- Perceptual disturbances
- Most often=hallucinations
- Emotional disturbances
- inappropriate emotion (affect), blunted emotion (restricted range), Flat emotion (absence)
- Movement disturbances
Disorganized Schiz
- confusion, incoherent speech, disorganized emotions
Catatonic Schiz
- Disturbed movement, repetitive movements, lack of movement
Paranoid Schiz
- delusions of grandure (God) & persecution, suspension/anxiety
Undifferentiated Schiz
- Doesn't fit other definitions "positive" and "negative" symptoms
- Positive- excess, overactivity, incoherent speech, inappropriate emotion, over excited movement, hallucinations
- Negative- social withdrawal, lack of speech, blunted/flat emotion, absence of movement, no hallucinations
Schiz Phases
- Prodronal Phase= deterioration in function
- Active Phase= full blown symptoms
- Residual Phase= full blown symptoms
Schiz causes
- Heredity
- poverty/homelessness
- sociogenic hyp= pov/homelessness are stress that trigger schiz in people that are vulnerable (genet)
- Social drift hyp= as schiz develops > risk of losing job/social support
Schiz: The Brain
- Abnormal (overactive) dopamine function
- positive symptom pattern
- Antipsychotic drugs reduce dopamine activity
- reduce symp, do NOT cure
- Enlarged (slightly) ventricles= brain damage to surrounding tissue
- most typical w/ negative symp pattern
What's the vulnerability stress model?
- likelihood of developing a psychological order
Conversion disorder
- a disorder in which serious neurological symptoms such as paralysis, loss of sensation or blindness suddenly occur without physical cause
Psychogenic Fugue
- loss of self-identity, person loses all sense of personal identity, gives up his/her customary life to a new faraway location and establishes a new identity
Dystymia
- less intense state of depression that has less dramatic effects on personal and occupational functioning
Learned helplessness theory
- Depression occurs when people expect that bad events will occur and that there is nothing they can do to prevent them or cope with them
Antisocial personality disorder
- no moral compass, lack of conscience
Borderline personality disorder
- people having wild swings of affection
- serious instability in behavior, emotion, identity, and inter personal relationships
Symptoms of Autism
- poor communication
- highly repetitive and rigid behavior
- fixation on routine/objects
