Stress

A state of disharmony or threatened homeostasis

Homeostasis

Refers to the tendency to maintain stability and internal equilibrium

Allostasis

Suggests that stability/equilibrium is maintained b/c internal, biological systems are able to fluctuate and change.

Hypothalamic - Pituitary-Adrenocortical (HPA) Axis

A complex system of neurotransmitters and hormones released in response to stress

Allostatic Load

Cumulative physiological damage that is caused by frequent activation of stress response systems over time

Hypothalamus

Part of the brain (limbic system) that links the nervous system with the endocrine system

Pituitary Gland

Small endocrine gland located at the bottom of the hypothalamus; Releases more hormones which travel to adrenal glands.

Adrenal Glands

Located above the kidneys; Releases hormones that enable the body to respond to a threat.

Coping

Thoughts and behaviors that people use to manage the internal and external demands of situations that are appraised as stressful.

Initated when individual perceives that they have been harmed, threatened, or have experienced a loss.

Primary Appraisal

Individuals evaluate a situation and determine how it affect their well-being

Secondary Appraisal

Individuals consider different response strategies to cope; What can you do in response.

Implicit Memory

Memory produced by prior experience. Unconscious and automatic. Produced by prompts.

Explicit (Declarative) Memory

Intentional recollection; Information that you know consciously.

Hippocampus

Finger-like structure association with the formation of new memories and linked to long-term memory. This structure is reduced or weakened when body exposed to prolonged stress.

Amygdale

One of the key regions in brain involved in processing fear.
Neural connections within this structure are strengthened in response to stress
When constantly experiencing fear, we increase our ability to recognize and prepare to respond to fear/stress

Stress & Memory

Prolonged stress impairs memory functions
Stress can also strengthen neuronal connections

Active Coping

Strategies that are responses designed to change the nature of the stressor itself or how one thinks about it; Actively modifying our thinking about stress

Avoidant Coping

Strategy including behaviors and mental states designed to keep from directly addressing stressful events. i.e. Leaving the situation

Can alleviate stress immediately, but temporarily
Can lead to an increased risk of stress/anxiety further down the road

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing

A therapeutic approach of responding to acute stress or trauma.
