When did animals and fungi diverge from their common ancestor?
About 1 billion years ago
Saprotrophic, saprophytes
decomposers
Are fungi sister to animals or plants?
Animals
Ecological symbionts
fungi have symbiotic relationship with plants
mycology
study of fungi
what is the mycelium composed of?
many hyphae; vegetative part of the fungus
what are hyphae?
long slender threads of cells that make up the mycelium
How are fungi heterotrophic?
By absorption. they grow into/over their foot, excrete enzymes to break down a portion of the wall, and then take in nutrients via absorption.
What are hyphae composed of?
chitinous cell walls
Is there cellulose in hyphae?
NO, chitin.
How many nuclei are in septate cells?
One, the cells are completely separated
How many nuclei are in aseptate cells?
More than one, their cytoplasm is still connected.
What is another term for aseptate cells?
Coenocytic
How many nuclei can fungi have in their cells?
They can be uninucleates, dinucleates, or multinucleates
What are the 4 Phyla in the Kingdom Fungi?
1) Chytridiomycota
2) Zygomycota
3) Ascomycota
4) Basidiomycota
Are Chytrids septate or aseptate?
Hyphae are aspetate (coenocytic)
What form of reproduction do Chytrids use?
Asexual via zoospores, they have NO form of sexual reproduction
What are zoospores, and what phylum/phyla are they found in?
They are swimming, motile, flagellated spores found in Chytrids
Are most Chytrids terrestrial or aquatic?
Aquatic
What Phylum of fungi is responsible for the deaths of frogs?
Chytrids, as amphibians are their main food source in their aquatic environments
What phylum do bread molds belong to?
Zygomycota
What kind of hyphae do zygomycota have?
Aseptate hyphae (coenocytic)
What kind of reproduction do zygomycota species exhibit?
Sexual reproduction via nonmotile zygospores (2n) in zygosporangium
ALSO asexual via sporangium
How do zygospores form?
They're the result of two hyphae merging together
What's the first step in the Rhizopus life cycle?
+ and - mating type hyphae fuse with each other (each are haploid, n) to create diploid (2n) zygospore via gametangia
What is gametangia?
The sexual fusing of a + and - type in fungi to create diploid zygospores
Does the formation of gametes (gametangia via two hyphae) in zygomycota involve meiosis?
No, it does not.
What's the second step in the Rhizopus life cycle?
After fertilization and formation of the zygospore, zygotic meiosis occurs.
What happens during zygotic meiosis?
The diploid zygote undergoes meiosis.
What emerges from the zygospore?
New sporangium that create haploid spores
Are the new spores haploid or diploid?
All are haploid due to meiosis in the zygospore
What kind of reproduction occurs when the spores are released?
Asexual reproduction
What does the asexual reproduction of zygomycota create?
The + and - mating types needed for sexual reproduction
What hyphae formation is similar to that of Zygomycetes?
Chytridiomycetes
Are Ascomycetes septate or aseptate?
Septate
Are Basidiomycetes septate or aseptate?
Septate
What are examples of Ascomycetes?
Truffels
Morels
Sac Fungi
Cup Fungi
MUSHROOMS
What is the asexual form of reproduction exhibited by Ascomycetes?
Budding/conidia
What is the sexual form of reproduction exhibited by Ascomycetes?
Ascospores
Where are ascospores formed?
In the ascocarp
