Bahavior Therapies
Oriented toward present using classical or operant styles
Systematic Desensitization
Fear conditioned to previously neutral stimuli (clas); fear maintained thru avoidance (oper)
Steps of systematic desensitization
- fear hierarchy
- teach (progressive) relaxation
- work thru hierarchy, returing to relaxation on signal
Modeling
therapist models desired behavior, the client learns thru observation; client observes the therapist in fear-provoking behavior without fear
In Vivo Exposure
client is directly exposed to hierarchy of feared stimuli
Exposure Theory
Asking client to recount trauma with sensory detail when they are fully ready
Flooding Implosive Therapy
prolonged exposure to feared stimuli while preventing avoidance and fear response fatigues over time
Cross-Cultural Issues
challenges western assumptions; respect and work within norms of other cultures; realize that class and power differential may influence client behavior
Unstructured interviews
no set format; requires generating and testing hypotheses; uses open and closed ended questions.
Structured interviews
written format often used by less trained staff; explict decision tree; more closed ended questions
Mental Exam
If unsturctured interview suggests basic cog. deficits, switch to mental status exam questions; check orientation (time, place, person); assess ability to focus attention, think abstractly, and draw simple figures
