genetic fallacy
claim is true or false solely because of the origin of the claim (the source)
appeal to the person (ad hominem)
rejecting a claim by criticizing person making the claim (not the claim itself)
composition
assuming what is true of the parts must be true of the whole
division
assuming what is true of the whole must be true of its parts
equivocation
use of a word in two different senses in argument
appeal to popularity
claim is true merely because substantial number of people believe it
appeal to traditiion
claim is true merely because it is part of a tradition
appeal to ignorance
assuming that lack of evidence proves something
two types:
- because some claim hasn't shown to be false, it must be true
- because some claim hasn't shown to be true, it must be false
appeal to emotion
use of emotions as premises in an argument (rousing up emotions instead of giving relevant reasons)
red herring
deliberately raising an irrelevant issue during an argument
straw man
distorting, weakening, or oversimplifying someones position so it can be more easily attacked or refuted

asserting that there are only two alternatives to consider when there are actually more than two
slippery slope
arguing, without good reasons, that taking a particular step will inevitably lead to further, undesirable steps
hasty generalization
drawing a conclusion about a target group based on an inadequate sample size
faulty analogy
argument in which things being compared are not sufficiently similar in relevant ways
