How does online dating differ from traditional dating?
3 main ways
-Access (exposure and opportunity)
-Communication (computer-mediated)
-matching(mathematical algorithm for selection
Pros of online dating
More access to potential partners, an initial sense of compatibility, ability to eliminate potentially poor relationship partners.
Cons of online dating
Access doesn't show how people interact, people appear in 2 dimensional way, math algorithms are based on similarity and complementary (not prove indicators of relationship success) and unable to predict how people will change.
Limitations of online dating
Incentive structure is inconsistent (if everyone met soulmate there'd be no customers)
Access because modest deception is wide spread. Side by side comparison promotes assessment mindset. Computer communication lacks richness of face to face communication, and no research proves dating sites provide more compatible matches than traditional dating.
