2 Types of Estrogen and Info
Estradiol: major estrogen in reproductive years, ovary is main source
Estrone: weaker estrogen, major estrogen post menopause. Adrenal glands and ovaries create androgen which is converted to estrone, fat and muscles help to convert it.
Medicalization of Menopause (2 therapies)
-ERT: Estrogen replacement therapy, associated with endometrial cancer
-HRT: Hormone replacement therapy (estrogen and progestin), considered safer in relation to endometrial cancer
Goal for Menopause Treatment
SERMS: (selective estrogen receptor modulators)
-"designer estrogen"
-acts like estrogen in bones and blood vessels (anti-osteoporosis and heart disease)
-act like anti-estrogen in breast and endometrium (prevent cancers)
-phytoestrogens- plant estrogens, appear to act like SERMs

-Carcinoma
-Sarcoma
-Lymphoma
-Leukemia
Carcinoma
Malignant epithelial neoplasm that invades surrounding tissue and to metastasize to distant regions of body: skin, large intestine, lung, stomach, prostate, cervix, breast. Tumor is firm, irregular, well defined border.
Sarcoma
Malignant neoplasm of soft tissues in fibrous, fatty, muscular, synovial, vascular, neural tissue. First, swelling in extremities, trunk, head or neck, highly invasive.
Lymphoma
neoplasm of lymphoid tissue, usually malignant, painless, enlarge lymph node(s) followed by weakness, fever, weight loss, anemia.
Leukemia
Malignant neoplasm of blood-forming tissues characterized by abnormal proliferation of leukocytes. Bone-marrow cancer, white blood cells uncontrollably divide, affecting production of normal white/red blood cells and platelets.
Early stages of Breast Cancer
Stages 0, I, II, and some III
Later/Advanced Stages of Breast Cancer
Some stage III, Stage IV
Latest USPSTF Controversy re: Breast Cancer
Past recommendation:
-1 mammogram every year (every 2) ages 40-50

Current Recommendation:
-no mammograms ages 40-50 (except at risk women)
