what is the global hunger picture currently?
there are 848 total undernourished people in the world
832 of these exist in developing countries
the other 16 are in already developed countries
have there been any changes in the global hunger picture lately>
within developing countries there was an increase in the amount of undernourished people there were in 2007
over time, there has been a trend of decreasing undernoursishment within developing countries
what were the malthusian predictions
he predicted that eventually the population would grow faster than agriculture, leading to people starving.
this in fact has not been happening
since thomas malthus was wrong, what actually happened in regards to the population/starvation problem
increase in agriculture because of technology
decreased death rate over time instead of an increase
LR decrease in food prices and undernutrition
what are the two UN strategies to prevent hunger?
millenium development plans
world summit goals
millenium development goals
by the year 2015 they want to half the US mortality rate between 1990 and 2003
eradicate extreme poverty by 1/2
minimize the amount of people living in extreme poverty
world summit goals
half the amount of people in poverty
progress in either of the UN strategies>
for the MDG yes there has been visible improvement
not so much for world summit programs. world summit was off espeically in 2002, with increases in SS africa and India
what are the costs of malnutrition?
direct costs: medical costs from child and maternal malnutrition in LDCs.
indirect costs: having to give up education, taking lower paid jobs, premature deaths, opportunities, disabilities
how much would it cost to reduce hunger?
US aid is 25 million. we could give more.
we could afford MDG by 2015 if we cut defense spending and used it for the lDCs (94 billion defense, need 24billion to .5 hunger)
undernourishment
chronic food insecurity where you cannot meet basic food requirements continually
you need enough food economically necessary and for socially desirable physical activity
why is energy an important aspect to malnutrition
you get energy from food. it gives you the proper proteins and vitamins necessary to maintain body weight.
regional disparities of undernourishment
africa has highest ranking general undernourishment while S. Asia has the highest amount of undernourishment within kids under the age of 5
developing countries have more undernourishment problems
stunting
when your height for age is 2 or 3 standard deviations below the median
wasting
when your general height is 2 or 3 standard deviations below the median
underweight
weight for age is 2 or 3 standard deviations from the median.
effects of stunting
decreased physical and mental capacity
what is wrong with the way the FAO measures nourishment in africa?
they have mixed cropped fields so the miss a lot of foods.
they eat a lot of smaller less known foods to live
the FAO people just eyeball the fields or not examine them at all
how might such FAO measures distort the percentage of undernourishments between the two regions (SE asia and SS africa?)
according to svedberg, there is a systematic bias towards africa. too high of an assumption that there is a lot of malnutrition in africa
why might FAO measures in SE asia be more accurate?
they practice monocropping so its easier to distuinguish crops
what is food security
the right to access food for all people at all times for a good life
how is foodsecurity related to undernourishment?
because it is similar to the definition of energy. without being able to economically obtain food we cant have a long life.
head count index
% of the population below the poverty line
poverty gap index
average gap between the poor's income and the poverty line
squared poverty gap index
weighted sum of the poverty gap as percentage of the poverty line. focuses on the very poor
