Operational definitions
A definition that specifies the operations or procedures used to produce or measure something, ordinarily a way to give it a numerical value
Population Sampling
researchers want a large population because they can't examine everyone, study of a sample of people that results for the same apply to the whole population
convenience sample
a group chosen because of its ease of study
representative sample
percentages resemble the population used to study behaviors that vary from one group to another
Random sample
every individual in the population has an equal chance of being selected without conscious plan... biases occur
cross-cultural sampling
groups of people from at least two cultures
Experimenter bias
the tendency of an experimenter to distort or mis perceive the results of an experiment based on the expected outcome
blind observer
an observer who records data without knowing the researcher's prediction. minimizes bias
placebo
a pill with no effects
single blind study
either the observer or the participants are unaware of which participants received with treatment
double blind study
both the observers and participants are unaware of which participants received which treatment
demand characteristics
cues that tell participants what is to be expected of them and what the experimenter hopes to find.. to minimize, conceal purpose of experiment, double blind study
Naturalistic observation
careful examination of what happens under more or less natural conditions e.g jane gooddall and chimpanzees
case histories
a thorough description of the person including abilities and disabilities, medical condition, life history, unusual experiences and whatever relevant
-most for unusual cases
-sort of like a naturalistic observation but it runs the risk of being just an anecdote, focuses on individual
Survey
A study of the prevalence of certain beliefs, attitudes or behaviors based on people's responses to questions...
-common in western society
-can be misleading... sampling limitations, seriousness of those being interviewed, surveyor biases
correlation studies
a procedure in which investigators measure the correlation between two variables without controlling either of them
correlation coefficient
a mathematical estimate of relationship between two variable
Correlation and Causations
correlation does not equal causation
Illusory correlation
an apparent relationship based on casual observations of unrelated or weakly related events
Experiment
A study in which the investigator manipulates at least one variable while measuring at least on other variable
independent variable
the item that an experimenter changes or controls
dependent variable
the item that an experimenter measures to determine how it was affected
experimental group
receives the treatment that an experiment is designed to test
control group
a set of individuals treated in the same way as the experimental group except for the procedure that the experiment is designed to test
Random assignment
chance procedures, every participant has same probability as any other participant of being assigned to a given group
