Direct-Object Pronouns
- if a verb doesn't need a prep. & noun object directly follows verb it can be replaced:
Vous cherchez le métro?
-Oui je le cherche.
Descendez dans la station. Vous savez consulter les plans?
-Oui, je sais les consulter.
Indirect-Object Pronouns
- if the noun object is a person & is introduced by the preposition à, the preposition and its object are replaced:
- note that lui & leur replace both masc. & fem. nouns
-Oui, je lui ai parlé.
Et vous avez écrit à vos amis?
-Oui, je leur ai écrit.
Indirect-Object Pronouns
- if the object of the prep. à is a thing, the prep. & its object is replaced: y
- Y also replaced a preposition of location and its object (dans le sac, sous la table)
-Oui, Elle y a répondu.
Et est-ce qu'on dîne assez bien dans l'avion?
-Oui, on y dîne assez bien.

- en replaces the prep. de and its object when the object is a thing.
- en replaces the prep. when noun object is introduced by a number or other expression of quantity (beaucoup de, plusieurs, assez de)

-Ah, oui. Elle en parle souvent.
Disjunctive Pronouns
- noun object of de is a person, the prep. retains its original position in sentence & person is replaced by:
- moi, toi, lui/elle, nous, vous, eux/elles
- Note 3rd person forms (lui/elle & eux/elles) show gender distinction
-Oui, on parlait d'elle.
Vous parlez des Ricard?
-Oui, qu'est-ce que vous pensez d'eux.
Prepositions with Object Pronouns
- if noun object is a person & is introduced by any prep. other than à, prep retains its original position in sentence & person is replaced by disjunctive pronoun
-Oui, ils partent avec elles.
Et pour leur frère aussi?
-Oui, pour lui aussi.
Position of Object Pronouns
placed either directly before a conjugated verb or directly before an infinitive, depending on which verb the object logically accompanies
never separate pronouns from the verb they depend on
when two object pronouns are used together, they follow this order before verb

Position of Object Pronouns - Compound Tenses
- object pronouns precede the first verb
- the past participle of a verb using avoir as the auxiliary agrees with any direct object pronoun preceding the verb
- When le and les are used as object pronouns, there is no contraction with de or à
Object Pronouns with the Imperative
- object pronouns used w/ a negative imp. immediately precede the verb & follow normal order

- With an affirmative imp, the object pronouns immediately follow the verb, connected by hyphens in this order:
Donnez-lui-en.
Vas-y.
Parlez-m'en.
Passe-la-moi*
*Me & te are replaced by moi & toi when only or last pronoun hyphenated
Disjunctive Pronouns as Compound Subject/Object
moi, toi, lui/elle/soi, nous, vous, exu/elles
- compound subjects/objects can be composed of two or more disjunctive pronouns
- the noun precedes the pronoun
- subject pronoun is repeated for nous or vous, ils is often omitted
Disjunctive Pronouns After a Preposition
- Remember to replace the object of any preposition except à ( + person or thing) or de ( + thing) by the appropriate disjunctive pronoun
Disjunctive Pronouns in Impersonal
- when the impersonal subject pronoun on is used, soi is used as the object of a preposition
On aime travailler pour soi.
Disjunctive Pronouns in -Même
- the ending -même(s) added to any of the disjunctive pronouns reinforces the pronoun
- -même(s) becomes -self (i.e. myself, himself, yourself)
- agrees in number with the pronoun it accompanies
