What are the three levels of defense?
1) Skin
2) Inflammation
3) Immune Response
What is the inflammatory response and what are the steps in the inflammatory response?
Non-specific.
Cells infected with microorganisms release chemical signals (including histamine)
Signals increase blood flow and heat (hence the red area around cuts)
White blood cells (macrophages) migrate to infected area and engulf and destroy microorganism.
Capillaries leak causing swelling and blood clots.
White blood cells clean up dead microorganisms.
What is the complement system?
Chemical defense system. Specific and Non-specific.
Supplements the inflammatory response and complements the immune response.
What are complement proteins and what do they do?
20 diff. complement proteins synthesized in the liver and circulate bloodstream.
Membrane Attack Complement (MAC): cylindrical multi-protein that pokes pores in invading microorganisms.
What are lymphocytes?
White blood cells that originate in the bone marrow and mediate the immune response.
What are B and T cells?
Lymphocytes apart of the immune response. Formed by mitotic division in bone marrow.
B-cells mature in the bone marrow and mediate antibody directed immunity.
T-cells mature in the thymus and mediates cellular immunity.
How do B cells function in the immune system?
Produce antibodies.
Antibody-mediated immunity.
What are antibodies and antigens?
Antibodies are proteins produced by B cells that bind to foreign molecules and deactivate them
Antigens are the foreign molecules.
What cell produces antibodies?
B cells
What are T cell receptors (TCRs)?
Unique proteins produced by mature T cells. Found on the surface of T cells.
Bind to cells that are infected.
How do T cells function in the immune system?
null
What are the two interconnected parts of the immune response?
null
explain the difference between the two, including what components are involved in each.
null
How are the antibody-mediated immunity and cell-mediated immunity interconnected?
null
How do these helper cells affect both of these immune responses?
null
What are memory cells and what is their purpose?
null
What causes the production of these memory cells?
null
What are effector cells?
null
What are cytotoxic (killer) T cells?
null
What are the two blood groups of major significance? Why are they important?
null
When does HDN occur?
null
What are the HLA genes and why are they important?
null
What is a haplotype?
null
In AIDS, what does the HIV virus selectively infect?
null
How does HIV affect the immune system?
null
