Intraepithelial Gland
Type of multiucellular gland. Releases directly onto surface. Nasal mucosa and penile urethra.
Secretory Sheet
Multicellular gland type. Large accumulation of glands. Found in stomach.
Simple Duct
Single duct and secretory unit. No branching.
Compound Duct
Branched ducts, leading to multiple secretory units.
Tubular Duct
Shape Classification.
Narrow tubular lumen.
Alveolar Duct
Shape Classification.
Round flask like secretory unit with a wide lumen.
Acinar Duct
Shape Classification.
Round flask like secretory unit with narrow lumen
Tubulalveolar/Tubuloacinar Ducts

Acinar - more narrow, Alveolar - wider.

Serous Glands
Watery and protein rich secretion..
Histology: Pancreas. Round nucleus, lower 1/3 of cell. Apical secretory granules. Blue RER
Serous Gland Histology
Apical secretory granules (supranuclear). Pale Blue RER. Round Nucleus in lower 1/3 of cell.
Mucous Glands
Glycoprotein product - PAS+. Thick and viscous: very hydrophilic. Mucinogen inside cell - removed for LM prep. Flattened nucleus.
Sebum
Holocrine secretion. Waxy, lipid rich (cholesterol) secretion. Sebaceous glands.
Sweat
Watery and hypotonic. Eccrine - low protein, odorless. Apocrine - more protein, smelly.
Milk
Watery suspension of protein (some IgA), lipids, carbohydrates, mineral, electrolytes.
Protein secreted by merocrine. Lipids secrete via apocrine.
Mixed Function Gland
2 acini types: Serous and mucous. Mucous on inside with Serous Demilune.
Cap may be result of fixation. Rapid freezing shows Secretory Canaliculi channels allowing mucous and serous products to mix. EX salivary glands.

Conventional fixation artifact of mixed function gland. Outer serous acini covering inner mucous acini
Secretory canaliculli
Channels between mucous cells allowing serous secretions to mix into a mucoserous product.
Myoepithelium
Spindle shaped cells in basement membrane of secretory units. Sit between basal lamina and basal membrane. Actin/Myosin contractile units - squeeze out secretory product. Keratin intermediate filaments. Ectoderm origin.
