Back of an area of the body.
Inferior
Area that faces away from the head and toward the feet of the body.
Posterior
Back of an area of the body.
Superior
Area that faces toward the head of the body away from the feet.
Ventral
Front of an area of the body.
Median Plane
Divides the body into right and left halves.
Sagittal Plane
Parallel to the median plane.
Frontal Plane
Divides the body at any level into anterior and posterior portions.
Horizontal Plane
Divides the body at any level into superior and inferior portions and is perpendicular to the median plane.
Medial
An area closer to the median plane of the body or structure.
Lateral
An area farther from the median plane of the body or structure.
Proximal
An area closer to the median plane.
Distal
An area farther from the median plane.
Ipsilateral
Structures on the same side of the body.
Contralateral
Structures on the opposite side of the body.
Superficial
Structures located toward the surface of the body.
Deep
Structures located inward, away from the body surface.
Midsagittal Section
A cut through the median plane.
Frontal Section
A cut through any frontal plane.
Transverse Section
A cut through a horizontal plane.
Frontal Region
Includes forehead and the area superior to the eyes.
Supraorbital Ridge
Inferior to each eyebrow.
Glabella
Smooth, elevated area between the eyebrows.
Frontal Eminence
Prominence of the forehead.
Parietal and Occipital Regions
Covered by the scalp.
Scalp
Consists of layers of soft tissue overlying the bones of the braincase.

Oval flap of the ear.
External Acoustic Meatus
Part of external ear.
Helix
Superior and Posterior free margin of the auricle.
Lobule
Fleshy protuberance of the earlobe.
Tragus
Smaller flap of tissue anterior to the external acoustic meatus.

Other flap of tissue opposite the tragus.
Intertragic Notch
Deep notch between the tragus and antitragus.
Orbital Region
Region including the eyeball.
Orbit
Contains the eyeball and all its supporting structures.
Sclera
White area on the eyeball.
Iris
Circular, central area of coloration.
Pupil
Opening in the center of the iris.

Outer corner where the upper and lower eyelids meet.
Medial Canthus
Inner angle of the eye.
Nasal Region
External nose is the main feature.
Root of the Nose
Located between the eyes.
Nasion
Midpoint landmark of the nasal region inferior to the glabella that corresponds with the junction between the underlying bones.
Bridge of the Nose
Bony structure inferior to the nasion.
Apex of the Nose
Tip that is flexible when palpated because it is formed from cartilage.
Naris
Nostril
Nasal Septum
Seperates the nares.
Ala
Winglike cartilaginous structure that binds the nares.
Zygomatic Region
Overlies the cheekbone.
