Nitroglycerine
increases blood supply to the heart
beta blocks/Ca channel blockers
lower Bp and reduce heart pumping
Vasodilators
expand narrow blood vessels
anticoagulants
help prevent formation of blood clots
Coronary artery graft
small piece of healthy vein is grafted around a blocked coronary artery- last resort
angioplasty
inflatable catheter is used to open blocked artery
Gender differences in CVD recovery
women tend to be older than men, it is not diagnosed as early in women, more procedures done on men
systolic Bp
highest pressure generated when heart contracts
diastolic Bp
highest pressure when heart is at rest.. between beats
Type A people and CVD
tend to have more clotting and higher cholesterol
display more autonomic behaviors- elevated HR, higher Bp
less likely to stay calm when stressed
GET stressed easily
psychosocial factors of CVD
social support, depression, clinical anxiety, SES and job stress
psychosocial vulnerability model
direct effect on health: loneliness/living alone: risk factor for CVD especially if both combined
perception of little support
poor quality of relationships: high systolic Bp, artery blockage
Health Behavior Explanation
poor support: less likely to be motivated to exercise, take meds
indirect effect on CVD
cynical people may perceive healthy behaviors as unimportant
excessive alchohol and drug use with hostility
Type 1 Diabetes
unable to produce insulin, immune system attacks producing cells
Type 2 Diabetes
unable to utilize insulin, can't produce enough or insensitivity to it
blood sugar does not get into the cells to be stored for energy
FAST
face, arms, speech, time
carcinoma
attack epithelial cells, most common, include breast, colon, prostate, lung, pancreas and skin cancers
sarcoma
malignancies of muscle, bone and cartilage cells- 2% of cancers
lymphoma
lymphatic system, includes hodgkin's and non-hodgkin's
Leukemia
attacks blood cells and marrow, leads to proliferation of WBC which impairs immune system. more adults than children
immune surveillance theory
natural killer cells prevent cancer cells from turning into tumors- but if immune system is overwhelmed by too many cancer cells or is under stress- they can develop
Biphasic Model
only current chronic stressors cause global suppression of immune system, not short term
Dealing with Cancer
surgery, chemo, emotional support, social support
Stage 1 HIV
immune system destroys most of HIV cells, but minor symptoms
Stage 2 HIV
months or years, latency, swollen lymph nodes, T cells fall
Stage 3 HIV
number of T cells decreases further, immune system impaired, infections emerge
Stage 4 HIV
t cells drop immensely, infection invades body, death within 1 to 2 years
gP 120
protein coat of HIV- attacks brain and leads to forgetfulness, inability to concentrate and confusion
some can live 15 years?
strength of initial immune response and genetic vulnerability- requires protein receptor to bind to T cells- some genes protect against this or slow the process down
HAART program
Highly Active Antiretroviral therapy- use zidovudine (AZT) and protease inhibitors
social cognitive theory
percieved social norms
self efficacy
social skills
