border-width: 1px 0; } .theNote{ background-color:white; } } null Demeter glories in the harvest Persephone picking flowers Narcissus (grown by Gia= earth, who was doing a gavor for the one who receives many guests= Hades gave a sense of holy awe had 100 heads growing from the root up went to pick the Narcissus- earth opened up under her Hades riding on a chariot drawn by immortal horses seizes her and drove away as she wept Demeter hears her cries, searched the land but no one would tell her the truth of her daughter 9 days hold torches searching (attribute) in grief did not bathe or eat Hekate comes to tell Demeter that she heard the cries but did not see the two set forth to Helios= seeing-eye of gods and men He tells her that Zeus gave her to Hades as his wife Demeter acts as human to live among humans shunned company of gods and lofty Olympus asks girls for a name of a house she can go and work for help raise children Mother of the girls invited Demeter to come work for w/e wage Demeter did not partake in food or drink wasting away with yearning for daughter Metaneira - on of the girls- told Demeter she thought she was a noble one asks Demeter to take her little boy and nourish him Demeter used Ambrosia from her breast would conceal him within the menos of the fire Metaneira sees this one night and cries out Demeter, mad, takes the boy out of the fire and puts him down on the floor away from her would of made him immortal but Metaneira's ignorance made Demeter furious and give the boy no way to avoid death still he will be honored b/c he sat upon her knee Demeter instructed them to build her a temple, and altar on a prominent hill she made that year the most terrible for mortals earth did not send up any seeds she could of destroyed the entire race of humans Zeus notices the people are not making sacrifices to the gods sends gods one by one to call out to Demeter, offer her beautiful gifts she harshly said no to their words she would never go to Olympus She would never send up the harvest until she saw with her own eyes her daughter sent Hermes to persuade Hades to let Persephone leave Hades tells Persephone to go but gives her pomegranate to eat Zeus orders Persephone spend 1/3 of each year in realms of underworld Persephone and Demeter went to Olympus to join company of other gods
