Non-severe effects:
- Diarrhea, Headache, N/V, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, rash
- 80% sulfasalazine intol pts can tolerate 5-ASA, 20% have sim effects
- AVOID in pts allergic to ASPIRIN
- May take wks-mths to work at appropriate doses
- Treatment Options: Oral Aminosalicylates, topical mesalamine, or topical steroids
- Topical mesalamine agents are superior to topical steroids OR oral aminosalicylates
- ⇒ Combo of oral & topical aminosalicylates are more effective than either alone.
