Deism

France?s medieval representative assembly, consisting of the First Estate (the clergy), the Second Estate (the nobles), and the Third Estate (the commoners).

The Bastille

French protestors storm the Bastille( a medieval fortress) to take the weapons rumored to be stored there as a result of punishment by king for protesting, no weapons, but liberated some obscure nobles and found gun powder, symboled end of old ways, commemorated as day that people took power to make citizens in control in France

The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen

National Assembly in France drafts when feel are losing control of the revolution, emphasizes Basic freedoms, liberties (innocent until proven guilty), nobles/all will pay taxes, sovereignty lies with the people (actually National Assembly) not king

March on Versailles

French women decided protest would be more effective if in front of king, went to king, though he promised he would help, women marched him back to France carrying the head of his officers, revealed spread of revolution, not supported by National Assembly (declaration of rights supposed to prevent this)

Reign of Terror

French Revolution time period in which anyone who had second thoughts about the revolution or against it was removed, led by Robespierre, guillotine was main weapon of choice in the name of human rights

Karl Marx

changed the pattern of society, now all work toward common goal, pointed out capitalist system ensure the rich got richer and the poor got poorer, foretold overthrowing

Germinal:

novel written by Emile Zola to mobilize the French public opinion to move against specific injustices

Saint Domingue:

White wanted to state revolution, but freed blacks not in favor, felt France kept their freedom intact. Slaves tried to take over, the slave beat the white and freed blacks and took control of most of Saint Domingue, leading toward a formal declaration of independence. Napoleon sent troops to regain control over colony; beat by the slaves, success at removing the French, claimed Saint Domingue as an independent nation: Haiti.

Creoles:

group who was elite Spaniards by blood but born and raised in Southern and Latin America, upset no influence in government

The Middle passage

Trip, as part of the Atlantic Slave Trade, transport (shipping) African slaves across the Atlantic, high mortality rates

Shaka Zulu

effective leader of feared fighting force in S.A., instilled sense of training and discipline in troops, extraordinary development, land growth

The ?Great Trek?

British wanted to control the Boer's,Boer's made the Great Trek to new territory and established to new states

The Berlin Conference

meeting to regulate European colonization of trade in Africa, led to the formalization of the scramble for Africa

Suez Canal

provided short cut in northern Africa (Egypt), cut trip to asia in half -> formed toll-way established, the opening ceremony led to Eqypt's economy on the verge of collapse, Egypt had to sell the Canal to Britain, but the money was not enough to restore economy. Egyptian people about to rebel, Britain afraid of new gov forming and nullification of the sale, so Britain sent troops to protect and as a result got to colonize egypt

Janissaries

soldiers of the Ottoman empire in southern Africa, did not fight for patriotism, but for money. Paid if active or not, in campaign, win/lose for life, cannot be removed with army because they are the army, killed two empires against them

Aurangzeb

successful Indian military campaigns, lay the foundation for decline of the Mughal Empire, spread sources of government too thin across territory and religious arguments (Aurangzeb intolerable of all other religions, launch measure of religious persecution).
