Central Idea: Providing the audience with information about the iPhone will help them to decide whether or not to buy one. Introduction: AGD: We all have an mp3 player, a cell phone, and a camera. We all surf the web and check email. Now imagine having all of those devices and services in the palm of your hand, in a single device, the iPhone. Ethos: ATT.com announced the release of the iPhone to be June 29th. Thesis: Hearing about the iPhone will allow you to make an educated decision on whether or not to purchase an iPhone for yourself. Preview: I?m going to talk to you about some of the features of the iPhone and also its disadvantages, but first let me show you a short 30 sec clip demonstrating the iPhone from apple.com. (http://images.apple.com/movies/us/apple/iphone/ads/2007/how_to/apple-iphone-how_to_848x496.mov) Transition ? So what is an iPhone? Body: Main Idea #1: Apple.com, accessed on June 11 (2007), lists the features of the iPhone. The iPhone is a camera phone, an iPod, and an internet browser all in one device. The iPhone is first an iPod. It has a 3.5in state of the art touch screen that allows you to select your favorite music with a touch of a finger. It is also capable of playing videos and viewing album art (and other pictures for that matter). It even has a built in speaker for playing music according to engadget.com in a January 2007 article. The iPhone is also a camera phone. Its capable of taking 2 Mega-pixel pictures with the camera. You can make calls by dialing in numbers using the touch pad, or by touching your contacts name on the screen. It also displays all of you?re voicemails in a list, so no more listening to all your voicemails just to find that one you?re looking for. The iPhone also uses the Safari browser to view websites. The Safari browser is the most advanced web browser ever on a portable device according to apple.com. It?s great for downloading maps, getting the weather forecast, staying updated on the news, accessing email, and just browsing the web in general. Internal Review/Transition ? So an iPhone is an iPod with a touch screen, a camera phone, and a web browser all wrapped up in one little device. Now lets talk about some of the disadvantages of the iPhone. Main Idea #2: Despite all the hype and great features of the iPhone, it does have some flaws, mainly its exclusive to AT&T and its quite expensive. Apple and AT&T have signed a 5 year contract keeping the iPhone exclusive to the AT&T network, according to usatoday.com, in an article posted last month, in (May 2007). This could be a big problem for the nearly 80% of wireless users not on the AT&T network according to Forrester Research. For those not switching networks just for the iPhone, a new device from another company could very possibly be available to you within the next 5 years, on your network. Another big disadvantage that comes with the iPhone is the price. It comes in 2 variations for now, the 4GB and the 8GB versions. The 4GB one come at a cost of $500, and the 8GB one comes at $600 according to ATT.com, accessed on June 11 (2007). That?s a lot of money for most people. It also costs at a minimum of about $30 per month extra just for the internet access. That?s another $360 per year. Internal Review/Transition ? The iPhone has its disadvantages, its exclusive to the AT&T network and its also very costly. Conclusion: Review: The iPhone has many great features but it also comes with some disadvantages. Thesis: This information should help you to decide whether or not the iPhone is right for you to go purchase for yourself. Tie to Introduction: So the next time your going out the door, grabbing everything u need on the way out, will you be grabbing your phone, mp3 player, digital camera, and your laptop? Or just your iPhone? It?s up to you to decide. References Cauley, Leslie. "AT&T Eager to Wield Its iWeapon." USA Today. 22 May 2007. 11 June 2007 . Forrester Research. 11 June 2007 . "iPhone." Example Outline for Informative Speech #2 Student Speech 2006 Author: Mitali Parthasarathy, George Mason University student Title: The Home Energy Saver Tool Specific purpose: To inform my audience about the Home Energy Saver tool and its applications. Central Idea: The Home Energy Saver helps users estimate how much energy and money can be saved and how implementing energy ? efficiency improvements can reduce emissions. Introduction: Attention getter: Pearl Pressman Liberty, a 29,000 Sq. Feet commercial print facility in Philadelphia saved $21,000 in one year by implementing lighting upgrades. The online article in www.energystar.gov of June 9 2007, states that energy reductions from these upgrades are equivalent to removing 28 cars from U.S. highways, or planting 56 acres of trees in U.S. forests. This was made possible by the EPA?s energy efficient program called ENERGY STAR. The ENERGY STAR program funded by the DOE and EPA has extended its service to help save energy in residential buildings by developing an Internet ? based tool called Home Energy Saver. Thesis: The Home Energy Saver helps users estimate how much energy and money can be saved and how implementing energy ? efficiency improvements can reduce emissions. Significance & Ethos: Reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases and protecting the environment is a major issue today. Home Energy Saver can help achieve this by identifying possible energy saving upgrades in homes. Additionally, it also helps save money. Their website hes.lbl.gov accessed June 9 2007, states that Home Energy Saver can save 30% on HVAC systems and hot water alone resulting in a 60% decrease in the total bill amount. Preview: First, I will explain how the tool works and how it is used. Next, I will explain the features offered by the Home Energy Saver. Then, I will explore its uses. Finally, some of its limitations. (Internal Preview/Transition ? Let us try to understand how to use the tool and how it works.) Body: Main Idea #1: Working and Method to use Home Energy Saver tool. The December 1, 2005 article of businessweek.com explains how to use this tool. By inputting details about the home like major appliances and their approximate age, the Home Energy Saver tool estimates the money spent on energy by an average household and the amount by which it can reduced by upgrading to energy efficiency appliances. The website hes.lbl.gov accessed June 9, 2007 gives a detailed description of how the Energy Advisor works. To calculate the heating and cooling consumption, the Energy Advisor employs the DOE 2 building simulation program, which performs a full annual simulation for a typical weather year. (Internal Review: We have seen how we access the tool and how it works. Let us take a look at some of the features of this tool.) (Internal Preview: Two important features of this tool are ?Making it Happen? and ?Ask an Energy Expert Service.?) Main Idea #2: Features of the Home Energy Saver Tool This feature provides information on how the energy efficiency estimate provided by the Energy Advisor can be implemented. It contains useful links to information like lists of specific efficient products and zip-code driven locator for retail outlets, tips for selecting a good contractor, information on what assistance your utility might have to offer, retrofit financing and energy ? related discussion groups. The USDOE?s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network, provides an ?Ask an Energy Expert Service? through which expert advice can be obtained by completing a form containing the description of problem encountered. (Internal Review: The two main features of Home Energy Saver are the ?Making it Happen? and ?Ask an Energy Expert Service?.) (Internal Preview: Let?s see some of the practical uses of the Home Energy Saver Tool. Two uses of this tool are saving Energy and money and, protecting the environment.) Main Idea #3: Uses of Home Energy Saver Tool The primary purpose of Home Energy Saver is to save energy and money by upgrading to energy efficient devices. According to article in energystar.gov, accessed on June 9 2007, last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved enough energy to power 10 million homes and avoid greenhouse gas emissions from 12 million cars - all while saving $6 billion. The June 9 2007 article of www.co2science.org states that Home Energy saver calculates the CO2 emissions in a home and suggests methods to reduce it like fewer leaks in pipelines. (Internal Review: The uses of Home Energy Saver, which I told you about, are saving energy and money and, protecting the environment.) (Internal Preview: Finally, I will explain some of its limitations. Some limitations to the usefulness of this tool are the pre-existing facilities in home and availability and cost of fuel.) Main Idea #4 ? Limitations of Home Energy Saver The September 19, 2005 article in the EERE website, www.eere.energy.gov explains that the energy savings made on existing homes depends on the facilities in the home. For example, if the heating system of the house were ductless, a lot of money would be required to install ducts and make it energy efficient. The EERE website also states that the type and cost of fuel used for heating system is a limitation for energy saving. In the Northeast, fuel oil and electricity is mostly used, while rural areas use propane and wood mostly. Depending on the type of fuel, the cost will also vary. (Internal Review: So, two limitations I mentioned are pre-existing facilities in home and availability and cost of fuel.) Conclusion: Summary: The Home Energy Saver is an easy way to save energy and money and protect the environment at the same time. Review: To review, we first looked at how the tool is used and how it works. Next, I explained the features offered by the tool. Then, I mentioned some of its uses. Finally, we saw a few of the limitations. Tie to Introduction: There are thousands of families that have benefited from Home Energy Saver just like employees Pearl Pressman Liberty. A small step starting at home, can a long way in making the world a better place to live in. References Anonymous. Energy Star. Retrieved June 09, 2007 from the World Wide Web: (www.energystar.gov).
