- Puts the most important UI element in the middle, then clusters tools around it
- Used when the user will perform a primary task in the center stage area
- Contrast the center area with the margin
- Make use of headlines, and make the main content jump out
- Example: Google docs, paint.net, studyblue
- Grid of pretty links arranged with a similar style
- Each item jumps to a page of similar importance
- Used for blogs and other things with lots of content
- Example: youtube, Hulu,
- Used to cram a lot of content onto one page without it becoming too confusing
- Each well-defined section has a clear label at the top, and each section has a similar style
- Think amazon account settings, UVa homepage, emazinglights
- Tasks are separated by tabs, each one for a specific set of functions
- Users are used to tabs by now so it works well
- Modal design when you know users will only need one at a time
- Modules are stacked and one can be opened at a time, accordian style flipping open
- Modules are related, and have similar widths
- Some wizards, picasa
- Seen in google maps, youtube comments, OneNote, Evernote
- used when you have a lot of content to show on a page, and your modules don't need to be open all the time
- Modules of content are stuffed into boxes that can be moved around independently
- used when there are a lot of modules, and users may want to use several. gives users a sense of ownership of the software
- Think: chrome start page or mediamonkey. Allows users to tailor pages to their tastes
- Group labels and actually controls together
- Perfect for settings since Gestalt's law means that they will get grouped together
- Proximity and continuity, smooth scanning of the page by users
- Start with a minimal UI, then expand it as the user makes choices
- Shows only relevant information, and is perfect for walking a user through something step by step
- Start with a UI that has a lot of options greyed out, then enable them as they become relevant
- used in menus, protects users while giving them a preview of what features are available
