Beginning of the environmental movements

discussions began in 1960s-70s
post WWII: concern about effect of atomic bombs on the environment
international agencies began to develop agendas for specific environmental issues: global warming, air pollution, etc.
there was no one international body to link everything together
the global environment is directly linked to economics

What are some examples of international environmentally based groups?

WHO: impact of environment on physical health
UNESCO: education, cultural and scientific research on impact on buildings and sites
FAO: focused on food and agriculture, researched the effect of pesticides on international development
IAEA: "watch dog" on global nuclear systems--nuclear watse, effects of nuclear explosions
IMO: maritime organization focusing on the pollution of the seas
ILO: Labor organization examining toxic materials in the workplace

What was the World Conference on the Human Environment?

A conference held in 1972 in Stockholm as an alternative to the United Nations General Assembly
The conference would only focus on one issue at a time...in this case it was acid rain because this was an important issue that Sweden was facing at the time
Notion of sustainable development: economic development without environmental damage.
