ligth goes to eye-->retina-->hypothalamus-->cicadian rythemn

if you are blind circadian rythem is off and can experience alterations in sleep/wake cycle

it is when there is no light stimuli to connect internal circadian

  rythem

-they are a pair of excitatory neuropeptide hormones

-they are primarily involved in stimulation of food intake

  WAKEFULNESS and energy expenditure

-they are Process C and Process S

-they are additive and control you sleep/wake cycle

-it maintains your basal cicadian rythem

-it has a daily peak and is a constant rythem

-if you try to sllep at noon and you cant it is

  becuz process c is telling your body you shoyuld be awake

-it is the homeostatic process

-incr your desire to sleep with every waking hour

-the longer you are awake the more you want to sleep

-a chemical that promotes sleep drive

-builds up when you are awake and decr when you are sleeping

-it is a competitive atanganist of adenosine receptors

-prevents adenosine from binding making you feel less sleepy

stages 3 & 4

-also known as Slow Wave Sleep SWS

-pt stops breathing during sleep but effort still present

-EMG and EEG show arousal but pt pt not aware

-snoring is typical

-pts feel tired

-we see a REM sleep disorder

  pt. acts out dreams-->strikes partner in bed

-this may precede the disease itslef

-sundowning-->pt becomes agitated in the evenings

-sleep cycle disruption-->sleep during day awake at night
