4/17 CREATEDATE 5/5/09 9:09 PM ?Old Gravestone? story about memory ? how will this story be remembered memory plays a very important roles in Andersen?s texts ?The nightingale? 1844 When you read a text you can have an impression of the text without any background but hwen you learn more about the text and author and class and hierarchy you can get to deeper meaning 1844 height of Andersen?s career Jenny lind-know as Swedish nightingale- Andersen fell in love with her and let her down easy- recognized the similarity in their lives coming from lower class and being successful in moving up classes Have a bird that represents the artist and how the bird sings and Andersen was writer which was his artist talent Nightingale represents art At the beginning recognize romantic dichotomy- lower classes(fisherman and kitchen made) know and understand nightingale but the upper classes do not understand it- Nature vs culture- those in culture do not understand nature and art Emperor goes on a quest to find nightingale to fufil his lack They see a cow and it moos and they think it is the nightingale Nightingale Performs for the fisherman who really appreciate its art but don?t have time for it the courtiers have time but don?t appreciate it and when it sings the only person that represents ideal audience is the emperor Song was so sweet a tear ran down the emperors cheek- ordered a golden slipper to be hung around the nightingales neck Emperor represents the potential for the ideal audience but don?t not- there has to be a bildung and understanding or experience that they have to go through to reach it Freedom vs captivity He was to have his own cage at court and allowed to walks a day That which is free and beautiful and allowed to express its self in nature is captured and put into the emperors castle- typical romantic ideal Real vs artificial Nature that things are real and the bird is captured and taken to the court- emperor of Japan sends artificial nightingale to the emperor of china People of the court don?t not understand how the artificial bird is inferior to the real bird but they don?t understand that and try and get them to sing a duet which fails Emperor of Japan has understood the difference between real and artificial- Knighting gale represents artist and song art and audience represents emperor then we also have entering into the text the critic and Andersen?s view- critics view pompous Idea of conformity is brought out in this text Power that art has- why is art important? Remembering things and stories we tell music we listen to- almost has life giving power and that death is vanquished The knighting gale heard of themperors illness and sang to bring him comfort and hope- death himself listened and said please sing on- emperor is saved by they power of life- has he understood yet??I shall only ask you to sing when you want and he will berak the mechanical- finally undergone that bildung and understand nature- Bird must be free so he asks to be free and to come visit when he pleases and to keep the mechanical bird Art cant only be bierdemeier have to see the things sometimes that are disturbing Final test- will you do what is needed for art to be free and hwo it should be- He pases and promises to never tell anyone that he has a little lbird that tells you everything- if people find out understanding of world will come from art they will think you are crazy and will lose your authority- bird forces emperor to promise and with those words the nightingale flew away Last words are goodmorning Wakeup call-0 now hav e aruler who understands things and art- will be morning that emperor can become a ruler and the ruler the needs to be Life Giving power of art Youth with skull frans Hals 1634- Mixing art with death- life with death- reminds everyone that everyone someday will die The Flea and the professor 1873 Different attitude towards art Professor represent the artist and flea represent art Is he actually a professor or does he just call himself that? He only gives himself this title and has not earned it Has one talent- balloonist- Andersen drawing on new technology of the Professor is a trickster and convalesce using a flea as ?side kick? The flea is more important hat the professor Flea was famous and could support the professor- instead of looking at it as life giving power your looking at it as a tonge and cheek Audience is professor and everyone he performs for- never do two shows in the same town because people figure out what your doing and force you out Digression- the savage people(audience) from Africa specifically the little princess Princess had overthrown her own parents and was charming and naughty- Andersen playing with us what happens when children are incharge? If they don?t do a good job that she will eat them Consumption of art- Andersen dependent on audience- recognizing all the eyars he had to appeal to his savage audience that didn?t understand him What happens when art and audience are separated? Professor become lazy The little princess stood waiting because professor created a balloon instead of a cannon and flew away The flea and the professor end up wealthy and no one asks where they got the balloon ?The flying trunk? 1838 Magic tale- characters reminiscent of magic tale- language of a magic tale Artist is a trickster- story teller and will tell stories to princess and king and queen Flys off to turkey and has an opportuting has a chance to meet the princess Fabliau kind of tale want sto marry the princess and get half the kingdom so doesn?t have to worry about money Audience is the princess her self He tell her story of all the things that exist in the room Matches are last thing he mentions- talks about who they were and where they came from and where they laid- also told about the childhood and were rich and could afford to wear green clothes all year round- Queen and kinga re amused and like the stories and the princess feels well informed- audience does not quite understand what the stories mean Story about revolution and overturn of the monarchy and how the monarchs them selves will not last forever but required to do thing in the kitchen- matches were one grand trees and have fallen and no longer incharge of the world Andersen poking fun at the audience Shoots off the fireworks and matches burn up his trunk and he is no longer aloowed to go back to the Pixy and the grocer Test- evalutate on a text we have not talked about in class- take tools from class and apply to couple of texts- this and the toad and one other cannot be the same as your paper Same sections as last time but one extra section to write on one of 3 texts not talked about in class
