Nervous system is classified by two divisions:
1. CNS (central nervous system)
2. PNS (peripheral nervous system)
Sensory division of Nervous System
Transmits information from the periphery to the CNS; contains receptors
Motor division of Nervous System
Transmits information from CNS to the rest of the body; sends motor information to effectors
Somatic Sensory
Recevies sensory information from skin, fascia, joints, skeletal mm and special senses
Visceral Sensory
Receives sensory information from viscera (such as stomach pain)
Somatic Motor
"Voluntary" nervous system, innervates skeletal muscles
Autonomic Motor
"Involuntary" nervous system; innervates cardiac and smooth muscles and glands
General Structure of a Nerve Cell - 4
1. Axon
2. Soma (cell body)
3. Dendrites
4. Synaptic Terminals
Sensory (afferent) impulses travel ___________ the CNS
In
Motor (efferent) impulses travel _____________ the CNS
Out
A group of axons:
A nerve
A group of cell bodies:
A ganglion
Boundaries of the Spinal Cord
Superior - base of skull
Inferior - Intervertebral Disk between L1 and L2
What are the two enlargements of the Spinal cord?
1. Cervical Enlargement
2. Lumbar Enlargement
Enlargements of the spinal cord are due to what
An increase in cell bodies that supply nerves to the limbs
Conus Medullaris
The "cone-shaped" end of the spinal cord
Primary component of Gray Matter:
cell bodies (somae)
Primary component of White Matter:
Myelinated axons (wrapping covering axons)
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there?
31
Pairs of Spinal nn in each region:
Cervical - 8** unusual
Thoracic - 12
Lumbar - 5
Sacral - 5
Coccygeal - 1
Match up (mostly) to corrosponding vertebrae amounts
Dermatomes
The segmental distribution of spinal nn (sensory fibers) to the skin forms
Hypaxial mm are innervated by what nerves?
Thoracic ventral rami
The abdomen is innervated by ventral rami, which are:
- Thoracolumbar nn. (belly button) at T7-T11
- Subcostal n. at T12
- Iliohypogastric n. and Ilioinguinal n. at L1
Sacral ventral rami innervate what?
Levator ani m.
Cutaneous nerves...
Pick up sensory, close to skin
Three meningeal layers (of Spinal Cord) superficial to deep
1. Dura Mater
2. Arachnoid Mater
3. Pia Mater
Epidural Space
The space superficial to the dura mater
Subarachnoid Space
The space deep to the arachnoid mater
Dorsal Roots contain what kind of neurons?
Sensory neurons only
Ventral Roots contain what kinds of neurons?
Motor neurons only
Spinal nn. contain what neurons?
Both sensory and motor neurons
