Chapter 1 Chemistry: Methods and Measurements ? Chemistry is the study of matter ? matter is anything that has mass and occupies space ? air is matter as well ? Chemistry is ? the study if natter ? its chemical and physical properties ? the chemical and physcial changes it undergoes ? the energy changes that accompany those processes ? Energy is the ability to do work ? The Scientific Method is a sytematic approach to the discovery of new information ? Characteristics of the scientific method: ? observation ? formulation of a question ? pattern recognition ? developing theories ? experimentation ? summarizing information ? models in chemistry ? to aid in understanding in the understanding of a chemical unit or system, a model is often used ? good models are based on everyday experince ? Technology from scientific inquirey ? expamples ? synthesis of a new drug ? solar energy cells ? solid state electronics preperation ? use of a moth attractant in pest control ? matter and properties ? properties are characteristic of matter, they deciribe the appearance and/or behavior of a matter in both phyical and chemical ways ? the three states of matter ? solid-particles are close together and organized ? gaseous- particals are far apart and disorganized ? liquid-partical are close together, but disorganized ? physical property- is observed without changing the phyical composition or identity of the substance ? ex. melting point ? boiling point ? color ? taste ? denstity ? physical change- produces a recognizable difference inteh appearance of a substance without changing the physical composition or identity of a substance ? ex. ? conversion from one physical state to another ? seperation by physical properties ? chemical property-
