Phys: 3 subdivisions (a. human variation- identify sim/diff phys charac and explain why, b. primatology- study of non-human primates, c. human evolution physically, how we look way we do) Goals of Phys Anth 1. identify/explain human variation and the significance 2. explain origin of humans Research/ explanation 1. evolutionary theories- are synthesis or a mix of ideas added over time to explain previous notions i.e.--nat selection determined by Darwin and his writing: Origin of Species which provided a convincing mechanism to explain the origin of humans though it is still only an idea 2. before Darwin: a. Lamarck-believed that there was a dynamic relationship btwn organisms and their environment although his idea that we could change ourselves to adapt to the environment was false b. Cuvier- developed catastrophism- fossil were the result of catastrophes within regions which were then repopulated by other organisms from adjacent areas 3. Darwin's help: a. lyell developed uniformatarianism- idea that the earth was formed slowly/gradually like the forces that shape the land today, b. Darwin's Galapagos research-collecting 13 different species of finches that resembled mainland finches (beaks evolved to adapt to different eating habits), c. Malthus-wrote essay on the Principle of Population with the intention of showing that there are limited resources for every organism, WALLACE also disovered the same theory which was good sign (why Darwin published his research!) 4. book included following notions: a. population continually produces too many offspring in order to maintain a size relative to resource materials (Malthuse's idea), b. physical variation within population so those who survive have traits with advantages (what he observed himself), c. offspring resemble parents with favorable traits inherited for survival/fitness (Lyell's idea) REMEMBER LISTS- he likes to test simple things!!!
