The issue is the process in which you deal with conflict. Falbo & Peplau (1980) Looked at couples in a committed romantic relationship -write an essay on how they influence their lover when there is a conflict: Asking, bargaining, laissez-faire, etc. These strategies can be classified in 1-2 dimensions: Direct strategies vs indirect strategies Bilateral (utilizes both people in the relationship) vs Unilateral Who uses what strategies? Gender differences: Males: more likely to use bilateral direct strategies -Men expect to be heeded Females: prefer unilateral indirect strategies -More passive -prevent waves Same strategies with any sexual orientation -Gender is a greater influence than sexual identity -Those satisfied with their relationship used direct tactics Sacrifice Impett, Gable & Peplau (2005) What do people bring into relationships? Approach motivation: motivation that emphasizes your connection--things you want to be closer to -the relationship is important in itself Avoidance motivation: things you want to avoid (ex: passive aggressive) -Something else outside relationship is more important like avoiding conflict -Some people taught to live with altruism, selflessness or individualism, pursue one's interest =Conflict: serve partner or be true to ourselves? Sacrifice can make the other person happy (approach motivation): -positive consequences for the other person and ultimately for myself Sacrifice to avoid conflict (avoidance motivation): -may cause anxiety / resentment in oneself Study college student relationships: how many times have you sacrificed for your partner in a 2 week period? Personal well-being (what do you think of yourself)? Those who used approach motivation: showed satisfaction, enjoyed their relationship, less conflict Avoidance motivation: more negative affect Where do we go from here? When to take the next step? What factors lead people from deep intimate relationships into marriage? Physical Proximity: long-distance relationships are very complicated Demography : background, race, similarities like Religion Socioeconomic status: Your worth to society in general (very personal) "Goode" (1959) Tend to marry at the same level A higher socioeconomic status trumps all the other factors Distinguishable from the masses Measuring socioeconomic status: Income, education attainment level, Job (most important) It's your responsible to raise your socioeconomic status Shared values Preferences shown in mate selection (Buss & Barnes 1986) Most valued: Good Companion (best friend) Considerate Honest Affectionate Dependable Intelligent Kind Understanding Interesting to talk to Loyal Least Valued: Wants a large family Dominant agnostic Night owl Early riser Tall Wealthy Gender Differences: Women: Considerate, honest, dependable, kind, understanding, fond of children, well-liked by others, good earning capacity, ambitious, career-oriented Men: Physically attractive, good-looking, good cook, frugal Wolfe: 3 spheres of experiencing society: political, economics, social Gender has not changed much in social sphere
