First Quartile (Q1): Median of the lower half of your data set
Median: Middle number of a data set
- Middle number if data set has odd amount of data values
- Avg. of middle two numbers if data set has even amount
Third Quartile (Q3): Median of the upper half of your data.
Maximum: Highest number in a data set.
Interquartile Range: Q3 - Q1 (This gives you the range of your box plot or data set)
Range: The difference between the maximum and minimum value
- Range = maximum - minimum
Outliers: Data values that are much larger or smaller than the other values in a data set and therefore not typical of the data set.
- Ex: ( 1 , 43, 45, 44, 46.5, 187 )
HOW TO FIND OUTLIERS
Q1 - 1.5(IQR) Gives you the lower outliers.
Q3 + 1.5(IQR) Gives you upper quartiles.
Box Plot or Box-and-Whisker Plot
A method for displaying the median, quartiles, and extremes of a data set; shows the median and the range of a data set easily.
HOW TO CREATE A BOX-AND-WHISKER PLOT
1) List data values from least to greatest
2) Find the median, quartiles, and the extremes of the data set.
3) Draw a number line and plot points for the five values from Step 2 above the number line.
4) Draw a box from the lower quartile to the upper quartile.
5) Draw a vertical line through the box at the median.
6) Draw line segments or "whiskers" from the box out to the extremes (max. and min.)
- Outliers may sometimes be included on a box-and-whisker plot. They are represented by a dot unconnected to the box or any other points.
