What is it?
L'imperativo is used to give orders, advice, and exhortations such as: be good, stay home, and let's go.
How to form it (tu, noi, voi)?
1. The affirmative imperative for tu, noi, and voi is the exact same as the present-tense forms.
EXCEPTION: -are verbs in the tu form are conjugated with an "a" instead of an "i."
2. The negative imperative for tu is formed with non + infintive. The negative imperative for noi
and voi is formed with non + the same conjugation as the affirmative imperative.
3. Irregulars: avere (tu abbi, noi abbiamo, voi abbiate), essere (tu sii, noi siamo, voi siate).
4. Andare (tu va'/vai), dare (tu da'/dai), fare (tu fa'/fai), stare (sta'/stai), and dire (di') have irregular tu
imperatives in the affirmative.
5. Object and reflexive pronouns are attached to the end of the verb to form one word.
EXAMPLES: Alzatevi! Compremelo! Non rispondergli!
6. For pronouns attached to irregular tu imperatives, omit the apostrophe and double the first
consonant of the pronoun, except in the case of gli.
EXAMPLES: Fammi un favore! Digliela! Vacci!
7. Pronouns may precede a verb in the negative imperative.
EXAMPLE: Non gliele dare!
How to form it (Lei)?
1. -ARE verbs: present-tense io stem + omit "o" + add "i." EX: lavori
2. -ERE and -IRE verbs: present-tense io stem + omit "o" + add "a." EX: scriva, dorma, finisca
3. Negative imperative for Lei is formed with non + affirmative conjugation. EX: non vada
4. Irregulars: sapere (sappia), dare (dia), stare (stia), avere (abbia), and essere (sia).
5. Pronouns always precede the verb. EX: Le telefoni! Non gli dica!
