First known civilization. This place flooded alot. Mainly falls after thanksgiving then ends in April. Area that flooded regularly but they nevery knew when they would come. Water was the main way to transport things. Camel had not been domesticated yet. They may have had horses which come from the Mongolian stepp. They also had Oxen, but main transportation was water. Who are the Sumerians? Hierarchical society: centerally organized (ver large) King to peasant social rolls they were able to establish themselves independently and realitvely prosperous. They were Polytheistic: belief in many gods. However, they were single God devoted and it was either connected to your social role or maybe your city. Gods were distanced by sanctification (you had to keep a far distance from humans) <this is not a personal god> Sanctification is the process of making things holy or set off as seperate (it is so holy that it must be set off from the rest of society). Material world = Spiritual world Sumerions feared the gods and death. Epic of Gigalmesh Gigalmesh is half divine son of a god. Gods give him a friend named Kindu. He was afraid of death. Goes to learn from untumpishtom but ends of dying olong the way but along way he learns that you should make the most out of the life you are given CARPE DIEM.
