Short Range Forecasts
-Ranges from a few hours to a few days (2.5 days or 60 hours)
-Includes satellite imagery, doppler radar, surface weather maps, upper air winds, and pattern recognition
-If extends beyond 12 hours, then forecast is heavily weighted on computer drawn progs and statistical info
Folklore Forecasting
-Type of weather forecasting that is story like
-Sometimes true (sailors delight) sometime wrong (groundhog day)
Persistence Forecasting
-A prediction that the weather will be the same as the present weather
-Most accurate for time periods of several hours
Climatologically Forecast
-Long term average weather conditions are used to predict the weather for a given day
Trend Method Forecast
-Assumes that the speed and direction of weather systems with no change
Analogue Forecast
-Finding a date where the weather maps match todays maps (Pattern matching)
-And whatever the next days forecast looks like is what your predict
-To forecaster the map looks similar but it is never the exact same
Numerical Modeling
-Numerical equations exist to calculate the future state of certain variables (pressure, ,temp, winds, humidity, clouds, precip)
-Equations are put into computers, predictions come from computer models
(point int he middle is called "grid point"
NAM
North American Mesoscale Model
GFS
Global Forecast System
WRF
Weather Research and Forecast Model
Watch vs. Warning
Watch- Identified by the SPC and has potential for severe weather in the next 6 hours
Warning- Identified by the NWS and severe weather is happening now or in the next few minutes
Mesocyclone
The rotating air column on the south side of the storm usually 5 - 10 km across
Mesoscale Convective System (MCS)
-Large cloud system of ensemble thunderstorms that form convection
-Produce precipitation over a wide area
Mesoscale Convection Complex (MCC)
-Large organized convective weather system comprised of a number of individual thunderstorms
Squall Line
An organized line of thunderstorms that form along a cold front or out ahead of it. (Heavy rain, wind and hail)
Sheet Lighting
Lighting flash that isn't seen but cause clouds to appear as a diffuse luminous white sheet
Station Model Plots
,=drizzle
,,,=moderate drizzle
.=rain
...=moderate rain
*=snow
***= moderate snow
)(=funnel cloud
arrow thing= thunderstorm
Stepleader
-Leaves cloud base
-Faint and almost invisible
Approaches the ground, a positive charge starts upward and meets the neg charge
Cumulus Stage: inhaling (growth stage)
Parcels of warm, humid, air rises, it cools and condenses into a single cumulus cloud or a cluster of clouds
Updrafts
pockets of rising air
Mature Stage
Keeps rising air warmer then the surrounding air and the cloud continues to grow as long as updrafts continue
Dissipating Stage (exhaling)
Cold and drier air helps to evaporate the water droplets in the sky, the heavy air descends
Downdrafts
The exhaling process of wind/cook air from a cloud or thunderstorm
F Scale
A scale used of rating tornados
The higher the worse
