what is the definition of the greek work Mythos?
the utterance, something spoken. It is the oral, verbal, literary aspect of a myth.
What kind of tale is a "true myth"?
are stories dealing with major Gods and human beings relations with the divine.
What is meant by saga or legend?
stories rooted in a sense of history
What is the theory of rationalization?
there is a natural explanation for the supernatural
What is an allegory?
function as a symbol for something else.
what is the Oedipus complex?
it is a basic pattern of human psyche.
What is the collective unconscious?
is like what was said by sigmund Freud: "myths are like a person's dreams"
what is meant by archetype?
a pattern/image that is universally accepted to represent a common idea.
What is aetiological theory?
this theory interperets myths as an explanation for the cause or origin of a particular object or place.
what is structuralist theory?
States that patterns emerge from analysis of parts.
what is a Cosmogony?
The birth of the universe
What is a Theogony?
Birth of the Gods. the major theme of this is divine Genealogy is that order comes out of conflict.
What is chaos?
an explanatory principle which is not necessarily "disorder"
who is Gaia?
she is the mother earth, primordial mother of all. She comes out of chaos not as offspring. she produces her own husband without help.
who is Eros?
The god of sexual desire. He works on our mind and bodies. He explains the existence of sexual attraction
who are the Muses?
they are the Daughters of Zeus and the source of artistic inspiration
who is Mnemosyne?
she is the mother of the Muses. The goddess of Memory
What is the Sacred marriage?
between Gaia and Ouranos (mother earth and father sky)
How does Ouranos lose his power?
he made Gaia mad by shoving there monster children back inside her so she has Cronos cut off is penis during intercourse and in doing so gains his power.
how is Aphrodite born?
while Cronos castrated his father he threw his penis to the ocean where the sperm and sea foam mix and out pops Aphrodite.
who are Cronos and Rhea?
Cronos is the new father sky and son of Gaia. Rhea is a Titian, earth mother and another goddess of fertility
how is Zeus Born
he was born from Rhea but given to to Gaia so he wouldn't be eaten like his siblings and then Rhea gave Cronus a Rock instead.
what is the divine child motif?
A baby God or hero who is in danger from outside forces, grows up in safety and close to nature goes on achieve great things.
Who is Prometheus?
He is the God of Fore-thought
How does Prometheus trick Zeus?
He tricks Zeus with the sacrifice that the humans give him. He tells them to only give the Gods the fat of the animals they sacrifice and eat the good part so they don't starve.
How does Zeus punish Prometheus?
Zeus ties him to a rock and every day has his liver eaten by an eagle the sacred bird of Zeus.
Who is Pandora?
The First woman that Zeus decides to create to punish man she is all giving and the Archetypal "eve"
What is the symbolism of Pandora's jar?
Aetiology for pain and evil "kaka" Pandora opens the jar and out fly all the Kaka of the world. Jar= allegory for female womb and the lure of sexual knowledge.
